Jack dempsey question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is the issue in my tank, you see the pearsei and het and nothing else. The polys all log pile in the back and you dont even know there are six in there. Really thinking to rehome two polys.

So is the goal a dempsey or Red Oscar to add to the 300g, or another project?

I don't know what the plans are if I left it up to my kids and some of the poly section crew I'd have an afrowana and spotted gar lol but I'm not looking to go nuts and am still find of cichlids.

So the option are keep a pair of JD in a 75 and maybe an Oscar in the 300. But again I'm not confident that an Option would work even if it got along with the pearsei I enjoy watching the Polys eat so.....

This is what I've been looking at or thinking of.
Crassipinnis, synspilum, JD, salvini, loisellei (none available Dept for COA and I'd rather not do business if I don't have to) Coatzocoalos.

I'd really love to pick up argentea but that probably wouldn't work long term who knows

Tough one, do you attempt to add a fish and disrupt the balance you have? I decided to risk it, but I have a feeling the Oscar will compete with the bichir and eat up the tilapia and then I will have to rethink this whole thing! lol

I really do miss the movement and color in the tank when I had the regani, red bay snook and even some others in the past. But one by one the aggression toward the pearsei had been an issue. Maybe I need to rehome the Pearsei? lol, wont happen

You know I love hulk he really is like another dog to the family issues is Imo pearsei are either too aggressive or not aggressive enough. I feel like hulk still has enough jerk in him to dominate an Oscar even a wc one. For me it's the Polys. I don't miss the days of having to fight to get them food. Most of the cichlids I've kept even when they pig out have an off switch. Lmao I feel like woth Oscars and pearsei it's much harder to get there. I know I would end up rehoming the O if it bacame an issue again.

DMD123 DMD123 I do agree though having a little more color or movement wouldn't hurt. My group of polys is pretty active (for Polys lol) the only one that's a real dud is the faranah/candy bar the one congi is nuts the rest either lounge out in the open and swim a little. But yeah not much overall movement.

And 20 years ago it was probably more fun. I think we make it way to serious and the fun is gone. You should raise something that will make you happy. I say Go for it. Regular JD’s and Red Oscar would be fine!
Sometimes the common fish are the most fun to keep, that’s the reason they became common in the first place. For me I love saums and jags idc how run of the mil they are.

Good point. I guess I never got around to keeping JD's again because I've never seen ones as nice as the one I kept Soo long ago.

If you try I’m sure you could get one the way you like. If you get a few from totally different sources then you can grow them and pick the one you like best. I actually have two jags from different places, I divided my 125 for them, when they get big I’m going to keep the one I like best. To me it’s going to be worth it in the end being that I plan to keep this fish for its whole life, kind of like a dog but in a tank lmao.

J jaws7777 , stopped by my local Petsmart the other day and they really had some nice looking JD's. Almost tempted to get one.... but a little too big to go with my tiny Oscars. I cant believe it, you made me look! lol
