In terms of Jack Dempsey's having a reputation for hiding/becoming recluses, what is your experience of the fish?

So far of the two ive owned they are quite eager to roam the tank, come up to the front etc, however, neither are adults.

Mine will roam but a very reclusive overall and most I've had have been of the same disposition

Mine all roam but I've found that my larger ones hide as people approach the tank. Usually reemerge to some degree after a few moments but it makes it seem like they hide more often than they actually are since whenever you stop to look they are just watching you from under a rock or something.

the 7 inch Dempsey I had wasn't too outgoing until my jag stole his cave. he then became a bit of a drifter but a lil while after that he was ridiculously outgoing. he would bite the glass and pace around the front of the glass showing himself off and basically asking to be fed lol believe it or not contrary to reputation he was ALOT like a dovii in terms of activity and owner recognition, all energy. he also wasn't like those torpedo shaped ones you see. he was narrow and high bodied. definitely would have made an awesome wet pet if I had another small tank like a 40 or something.not that I did this but if you wanna see more activity out of your Dempsey feed him a little less I find that when any fish is hungry they are more outgoing than usual photo 3.JPG

My JD was much more adventurous when she was a juvenile. She is much more reclusive now usually only coming out when she sees me cause she thinks she is going to eat.

My male that is about 10 inches is very social and active does not hid at all.

IME, JD are more outgoing when they are juvenile because their greed for food over come their shyness. As they grow old, they become more mellow and reclusive, and can be skittish if kept alone. They are best to be kept in a community tank with boisterous tankmates to distract their shyness.

Perfectly put.
