I've come to find out when it's one JD they can be very Oscar like or if they are with other fish that are outgoing... But if its a tank of JDs forget about it once one hits the flight button they all hit the flight button...

Had a JD with a Chocolate Cichlid and some mbuna and he would come to the glass top of the water when feeding and what not.

I put him in a tank with a few female JDs and they brought out the panic button... After he spawned I put him back with the chocolate and he's back outgoing... Go figure

My 7 inch jd was really never stable. Every time someone came near the tank he would hide, and sometimes he came up for food. If he ever saw hi reflection in the glass that's when he would roam all the tank. Most of the time though he's hiding in his big 3 way PVC pipe watching, as if he's saying, "don't even think about it cause I'm watching you."

I have one that is about 6" and a really beautiful fish. He frustrates me so much by hiding in his cave whenever I get too close to the glass. He comes out eagerly to eat then retreats back to his cave. I've thought about selling him because it's frustrating to own a large fish that really doesn't swim around much but I haven't been able to part with him because he's so good looking. I hope he gets more outgoing when he's bigger!

Does anyone think it's cruel to take hiding places away from your Jack so he is forced to come out more?
