other than venting, the three easiest ways to sex a JD are:

As seen in the green box, the amount and area of gill plate spangling differs from males and females, females tend to have much more spangling and it goes all the way down to the bottom of the gill plate.

As seen in the pink box, males tend to have longer and pointed anal fins, and females have shorter more rounded off anal fins.

As seen in the blue box, females tend to have a more apparent pattern of vertical barring. This isn't a reliable means of determining sex though, as male JDs will exhibit vertical barring if stressed.

The only truly reliable way to sex a jd is venting. 2nd to venting would be the spangles on the gill plate. Some females exhibit the pointed anal fin and some males exhibit rounded anal fins. Looking at the fins is a good indication of sex but not always reliable.

Tough call imo. Yeah females have the color on their cheeks but it's not usually speckles like that. It's usually a solid blotch of color.

And yeah it has the verticals barring but it's showing a good amount of color down its side.

Hmmm time will tell I suppose.

TexOscar1 how big is your JD? If it's still very young the blue spangling that the females get on their gill plates may not be fully developed yet. I thought mine was male until it got bigger and then it became obvious it was female. So, a good possibility this one is female.
