The female is the one with the blue jaw. The male will have more spangles down his body.

Yes you can tell buy the gill plate, on females they have blue all over their gill plates. Also if you look closely at your pair you will notice the small differences in body shape and scale patterns.

yeah i agree with what others have said you look at the gill plate, females have blue all over gill plate while males only have it on upper half. i dont think the body spangling is a 100% way to tell sex because my female JD has the great body coloring like your male does but she has blue all over her gill plate (can't remember if i have vented her or not...)
