Jack Dempsey Sexing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can't help on the sexing of these guys as I'm in the same boat with my tank (have a three inch blue). But wow...good looking Blue Jack.

Ya I love these fish. I have 2 smaller ones in a separate tank. I found a place that has beauties. They are difficult to sex though unfortunately

From what I’ve read, EBJD are not terribly Sexually dimorphic so sexing them by look alone is a crapshoot at best.
Ya it seems that way. Nobody seems to know. I was hoping there were some highly experienced individuals out there that might have a good clue

Damn and he doesn’t just get the hell beat out of him by that flowerhorn or GT? Impresive
I purposely grew it larger before I put them all together. I still feed it more also so that the others don't catch up too quickly. It has worked out so far.

It took me forever to decide between a flowerhorn and a blue dempsey. I don't have the space for both as I only had a 55 gallon. I knew the flowerhorn would potentially need bigger space so that drove my decision. Good luck to you in your setup.

eventually they will not work together. Although you could grow your dempsey larger and get the flowerhorn later. I have a 75 gallon with the blue dempsey, 2 green terrors, and a short body flowerhorn. Also 2 separate 37 gallon tanks :) Eventually I will have at least a 120 gallon. You could always size up!!

As others have said EBJDs are very hard to sex. Best way is to introduce a know sex fish like a normal female or male JD. It's actions to the known fish should help you judge what it is.
In my case my EB is with a normal female JD, and by it actions I assume it's a male.
You can see here in my thread some videos and pics.

Now assuming mine is a male. I hazard a guess that yours is female. If you compare the two fish, yours fishes body looks more ovalish, like my normal female JD is compared to my EBJD. Also going off the assumption that the dorsal and anal fins have not been nipped on by other fish the fins on my male are way more elongated than your fishes are.
So I hazard a guess that it's female, and that is just a guess. You won't know for sure until it breeds and you see it lay eggs or try to fertilize laid eggs.

Your fish look great and best of luck.
