Jack Dempsey Sexing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
great looking JD I am leaning twords female do to body and fin.

As others have said EBJDs are very hard to sex. Best way is to introduce a know sex fish like a normal female or male JD. It's actions to the known fish should help you judge what it is.
In my case my EB is with a normal female JD, and by it actions I assume it's a male.
You can see here in my thread some videos and pics.

Now assuming mine is a male. I hazard a guess that yours is female. If you compare the two fish, yours fishes body looks more ovalish, like my normal female JD is compared to my EBJD. Also going off the assumption that the dorsal and anal fins have not been nipped on by other fish the fins on my male are way more elongated than your fishes are.
So I hazard a guess that it's female, and that is just a guess. You won't know for sure until it breeds and you see it lay eggs or try to fertilize laid eggs.

Your fish look great and best of luck.
This is great information. I’m glad I got some good intel finally. It’s still pretty young. Only about 3 to 4 inches. I have been wondering about the dorsal fins though. I have seen males with dorsal fins identical to that and also females similar to them also. I think you’re right though. I’m picking up a couple more jack Dempsey’s in the next week to see how it will behave with them. I think that’s going to be my last option. I really do appreciate the insight :)

I am assuming you know how to sex normal JDs?
The easiest way is to check for her blue beard. Now sometimes it may be harder to see. Here is my female. The first pic is when her mate is not around. The second is when her mate is around and she is in her breeding colors.

You see all that extra blue from her eyes sweeping around to her gill plate. Males don't have this.
So if you are getting some to test your EB make sure you get one of each at least.

I have heard that information before but have never seen it so evidently as your pictures. I will get one of each now. Thank you so so much. I’m very excited to experiment with this now
