This is my dads tank, and i already told him this and he won't listen and now he want's to put a divider in the tank instead, which i think is even more dumb.
Please tell your Dad that this is a very temporary fix in a small aquarium. He will only be shrinking an already cramped space. I wonder if my children think that I am hard-headed too? My daughter probably does. She tends to agree with her mother on everything.

That was the plan.
The jack demspsey is around 8-10 inches and both oscars are around the same.

whooaaaaaa...thats the problem right there. Also, as stated prior, water quality is probably already an issue. If he thinks he can keep 3 8-10 inch fish in a 40-50 g tank, Ill bet hes not doing 50% water changes every 3 days and probably lacks adequate filtration.

Those guys need to be re-homed pronto..or put in a 125+ tank with at least 2-3x the basic recommended filtration.

he does water changes every 2 months or so.

Wow.. I feel sorry for your fish.. Please start doing more frequent water changes, or better yet, Re-home all those fish you have.

Agree with everyone on the thread. I love my Oscar and can't imagine seeing him in a tank on his own less than a 75 gal. Think of the water like air and how bad it would be for you and two of your friends if you were locked in a small room for 1-2 months given lots of food but nowhere to go to the bathroom. You would probably start getting in fights with your friends and someone would get hurt. Then think about that rotten air.... I would jump out of a window (if there was one) after two months in a small room filled with crap and pee. Likewise your fish would probably leap out of the tank to die if you left the lid off.

There are fish that would be great for that tank. Even some small Chiclids. You can't go wrong with a pair of convicts... but only if you did better at WCs. When i think about it... why not return your Os and JD to the store today and come back with a pair of convicts? That way you're not going to be just watching three fish fight to the death and the winner slowly dying.

If your dad doesn't want to hear about water conditions and health (many old-schoolers think a fish should be able to live in a shoebox-sized tank full of turds and be fine), try explaining to him that any one of these fish normally claim a territory the size of a typical coat closet in the wild. So while a 50 gallon tank is marginally enough space for one of these individuals, it's not going to cut it in the long run for more than that.

Bluntly speaking, Oscars should be kept in at least a 75g to make nitrAtes easy to maintain below 20ppm. So try to get him to like the jack dempsey as it's the most suitable inhabitant of the stock he has now, and to return the others.

maybe show your dad this thread ... if he won't listen to you, maybe he'll listen to a bunch of experience fish-keepers who know that

a) you shouldn't keep even one of those fish in that small of a tank, let alone all three at once

b) doing W/Cs every 2 months in a crowded tank is just plan absuive

here's hoping he makes a change ...

get a larger tank and get a divider

or get rid of the fish a lot of lfs take store credit for freshwater fish
