Jack Dempsey?

I also just bought a Jack Dempsey from Petsmart and it matches your description very well. Theyre were two dark ones there, Mine is all black with a chocolate brown dorsal side with the black bars, it has a lot of blue toward the gills, and mine has more colorful fins. The other one there solid black, the whole body, with the exception of a couple small blue spots near the gills.

This is the stages of my JD. It used to be black then it got color. But it has the red I think your talking about. Sorry for blurry pic they are hard to photograph.
