JACK DEMPSEYS' EYES BURST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A little update: They are eating and being twice as active as normal. The eye thing isn't gone but they are acting normal at least.

Ok good... just ran out of salt... will epsom work?

Epsom is NOT salt. Epsom is Magnesium Chloride, salt is Sodium Chloride. Epsom can be helpful with some diseases but not in place of salt. Also when salting, it's only temporary, after a few days you need to do a water change to get rid of the salt or you will fry the fish's liver and kidneys.

If it happened after adding the heater it is most likely GBS. It is most commonly noticed in eyes fin and tails. It occurs when the temperature changes from cold to warm too quickly and doesn't allow gasses to escape properly as they normally would. It can occasionally occur in organs and cause death. The only thing you can do is maintain a regulated temperature and medicate to prevent infection if the GBS ruptures. Once the temp is regulated the gasses that have built up will disperse over the next several weeks. Usually 3-4 weeks depending how much gas has built up. If they are struggling to find the food try holding it in front of them.

What's GBS? That makes a lot of sense, because the heater I used is really efficient and the tank heated up 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) in about 5 hours. I thought that was slow enough, but apparently not.

GBS is short for Gas Bubble Syndrome. If your fish had prolonged exposure to unheated water then the temp should have been raised much slower. A heater is a definite must for that species but a quick temp change on a fish going from down to up is like a scuba diving pressure change on humans going from down to up. It's the fishy bends. Lol... I would let the GBS subside and then gradually increase the temp a degree or two each week to desired temp to avoid recurrence. I have a pacu that had a similar problem when he came to live with me. His previous owners didn't heat and all my tanks are 80°F....

lol fishy bends. Thank you very much. Did you notice a change in the fish's behavior with GBS? My male is much more active and dog like than normal, and my female is much more reclusive.

The pacu completely withdrew from his normal character until I was able to figure out what was wrong and get her stabilized. Now she's my little water puppy
