jack dempseys?

Can some one please tell me when jack dempsey turn really colourful? mines is about 6 and a half inches and only has those neon looking scales around his head and dorsal fin and on his gill plate. The rest of it's body is just kinda like brown/ tan and purple and has black bands down his side. Hopefully modest man can help ( I've seen pictures of your beautiful jack's)

also is this normal: my jack is really skittish and I have to turn the tank lights off and walk away to get him to eat?

lol Mine only has that colouration around it's dorsal fin :s i can only describe it as having the colours of a trimac mixed with a jack

I found I digital camera in my house the other day. I don't know where it came from but it's mine! but I don't have the link to put pics on the comp

Sounds like you have female some females are very colorful like males and others are pretty plane like it sounds like yours is my old female was that way to it most likely won't color up sorry and not sure what to do about it being skidish as my male is acting very skidish to but he eats we'll and lets me watch
