my two jds in a 30gallon are liplocking. it looks like they are trying to push up against each other while their in this lock. I've been doing some searching and googling and find that this is a sign of breeding and that most fishkeepers will panic and get frightened when this happened. I haven't been on this forum in a long time, but i think now is the time to ask for help. They will liplock for a long time and then stop for a few minutes, then come back at it.i do have a male and a female. I just put the female in yesterday. everything was fine, they were staying with each other, no nipping whatssoever. Today i find them both stressed. 10minutes later, they are back at it again. Should i be worried, or is this a sign of breeding?
Filters that are being provided: Penguin 350, Fluval 404. excellent water quality with weekly water changes.

That's a boat load of filtration for a 30g, nice work......As far as the JD's, it' either typical cichlid territorial rivalry, or potential breeding.....I'm sure someone can tell you what to look for, but not I....

dont worry about it....unless they are hurting each other by hitting in the side really hard i like to let them settle there dominace. if you see eggs soon its breeding...lol. how big are they bc a 30g is a lil small if they have any size to them.

no harm done....let them play

i was so scared when i seen this. i look online and it says that most fishkeepers always panic but its a sign of breeding. i am well aware of the fact a dempsey is not suitable in a 30. i was just curious to see if they were breeding or fighting. They do move their tails and bodies really fast in the same position. It's hard to explain, it's like in a wavy motion. then they lock lips again. now they are calm and swimming next to each other. I don't know if they will do it again or not, but i will check.

Are you sure it is male and female?! A 30 gal is small depending on their size. My JD is very aggressive and is now in a tank by himself because of his behavior. He would lip lock with ANY other fish so this isn't always a sign of a breeding pair. Just watch them and be sure that no one gets hurt. If they are smaller a larger tank will be necessary in the future although they are slow growers! :)

My Jd does it with all the other Cichlids in the tank it’s just him showing who is boss

WOW! That's Half JD/Half Texas NICE FISH!

Not sure what they do when they're breeding, but i had two good size male jacks that did that and were definitely trying to rip eachother apart. one of them ended up with a hole just above his upper lip that went straight down to the bone. eventually i had to give up one of them.
