Depending on how large the fish are I'm more apt to say it's territorial aggression.

Is this a case of boys being boys? Or boys will be boys?

I had this problem when my 7" texas male and my 6" flowerhorn female. They would locked for hours. It got worst after mating and having fries. My female flowerhorn got the best of my texas and wounded his lip really bad,,,it didn't heal and half his lip came off,,he died soon after.

IT's a thirty gallon.... With 2 Dempseys.. Maybe move to a 55 at least.. Just a suggestion.. Filtration means jack if your housing your fish in such a small space.. the female probably has nowhere to hide??? Or can't get there fast enough. And in my experience which isn't real lengthy with these fish, i Have to breeding right now in a 55. But still i need more space.. But they are not exibiting the signs your are speaking of... They are an established pair and when the male is ornry the female hangs somewhere else.. The female is the submissive side of this species.. and much smaller.

Eh giver em a few more days..
