Jack Dempsy fish

In my experience they dont have very much personality. Often times they are very shy and skittish. My jds are almost constantly hiding in their cave.

My JD hangs in one place a lot too, but tho she used to be skittish she has mellowed out. I think that the way I have stocked the tank has helped bring her out more. I have 4 other cichlids in that 90 and they're interacting all the time. I also noticed more "personality" when I changed to once a day feeding. A friend who's been in the hobby close to 30 yrs told me "a hungry fish is a happy fish"....and I agree.

JD's are anything but boring tho IMO. Mine used to take earthworms right from my fingers. She'd do a dance when she saw me walk in the room with the container....VERY cool.

Do you have one now? Pics? or are you just thinking about getting one? What is your plan?

well:

1. in my biology 101 lab there are fish tnaks in one of them is a large female dempsey, she does nothing but hide all day. I dunno if this has anything to do with other students seems to me like noone gives her a second glance.

2. My personal Jackdempsey about 5 inches, in a 46 gallon bowfront with senegal bichir and a leopard frog pleco (l-134). Hes a male with beautiful colors when he wants them. He eats anything out of my hand and has only bit me once and hasent since, i even encourage it but he knows the difference. i absolutely love him.

this is proberly becaue its a high traffic area, you could ad some dithers in there to bring he out

Jd's are great in community tanks as the other fish tend to calm them. They tend to be a bit more skiddish in solo tanks.

i have a male jack dempsey. i dont really give him a place to hide so he always patrols the tank. he often comes up to the front and begs for food.

as with any fish they tend to vary in personality, I had two in 125 with some oscars and one was really skittish and hid all the time and the bigger one was always out and about.

they arent good at fetch, rolling over... ok enough stupid talk

mine was not too aggressive, but i know a lot of people say otherwise. i think their personalities are a bit more varied as opposed to something predictably aggressive or meek.
