Jack Dempsy fish

it depends on the fish mine swims all day and loves his FOOOD they are agressive with other fish typical of cichlids. They get big mine is a male pushing 11" females stay smaller they need to be in a large tank they get really good color when bigger or breeding like mine all in all cool fish.

My JD's a slow grower but gamey. Doesnt take nothing off no other fish.

i have a male and a female and it depends on the time of day or mood. they will usually hide in caves or behind rock piles. but some times they will pair up and swim all around the tank. i like them you just have to give them a chance

well:

1. in my biology 101 lab there are fish tnaks in one of them is a large female dempsey, she does nothing but hide all day. I dunno if this has anything to do with other students seems to me like noone gives her a second glance.

this is proberly becaue its a high traffic area, you could ad some dithers in there to bring he out

i would but i think the dempsey alrdy kinda overstocking their tank and it isnt my tank to be putting other fish in.

My female was totally placid for years, would stay in a cave, and occasionally peacefully cruise around the tank. As soon as she was introduced to her mate, they decided to work as a team to murder all the other big cichlids in the tank by slamming them against the glass repeatedly. They had a rythmic system in which while one was slamming a fish against the glass, the other was getting ready to charge. Obviously I saved the other fish as soon as the commotion woke me up in the morning. Now they swim together, and do a shivery "dance" to each other, it's cute. Whenever they start to breed, the males background color goes from almost black to yellow orange with stripes, and they become vicious, charging at any motion in the living room! When they are in this mode, you can put your finger in front of the glass, and they will charge it, you can actually feel the force of the blow in the glass! Feeding one inch jack fry is like throwing steaks into a pack of wolves. One of my favorite fish.:headbang2

i have 2 jd's 1 male at 6" and 1 female at 4.5". i had the female with other semi aggressive cichlids like sajica, hrp, rainbow, texas, salvini and with swordtails, croys and danios and they were fine together but she was too confident and hipe abit, but now shes in a 120 with bigger cichlids like gt,sajica, texas, nic and shes alot more confident swimming around the edge of the tank when i go by.
but my male was in a 20 grow out while i set my 120, he was with a gt,green texas, con and now jag and 1 by 1 he haspwned them, now most are in the120 bar the jag and jd who are in the 20 divided, and still they both jump and figh with same outcome-jag gets owned, and my male is quite shy too.
m jd and jag are going in today and tomorrow:)
