I have ended up with what I pretty sure of being a female Vieja Coatzacoalcos(possible hybrid) and a female Jag both of which are currently approx 5-6 inches long in my 48x18x18 tank. I have been lead to believe that the female jag has already bread a few times so may have a little stunted growth. I am guessing both these fish will be maxing out at around 10-11 inches. They chase each other around a little but is just a bit of normal cichlid aggression and nothing has come of it. Do you think it would be stupid of me to even try keeping these 2 together long term with the Jag being the potential problem I am guessing?

I think that tank would be ok for a single female Jag with lots of filtration and no other tankmates

Actually, an all female tank can give you more problem than an all male tank. A riped single female will attempt to lay eggs on her own and get territorial trying to protect her nest and eggs.

Do you think the jag would be fine on its own? How big do females generally get? 12"-14"?

I swear on everything, I saw a pair of Jags. The female was as massive as the male, and both where the largest jags I have ever seen in person. I would estimate them being close to 16'' or so. They where massive, not only front to back, but up and down. Probable 6'' from bottom of the body to the top.

I thought I stunted my female jag years ago, back then we had the pair together and they were breeding at least monthly for no less than a year, we would just keep the eggs in there and let them diminish because of the community they were in. After not breeding for a while she absolutely started growing again and now is 13'' long. I honestly think with time the stunted breeding size can be reversed with proper care and room. She put on weight first and then slowly started growing again. I would not keep her with another large cichlid like this because she will still drop eggs and protect them without a male around. Jags are prolific breeders. In a tank that size I would maybe consider something smaller overall. I kept my female with a grammode for a while without problems they can handle their own and stay under 6''.
