Jag and Vieja together?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive never seen or heard of a 12" grammode? Ive had my male coming up on four years and close to 5". Even if they do grow to a foot you would have plenty of time to prepare. I just want to add that I said grammode to try to stray from larger cichlids. I would stick with something a little smaller and durable overall.

There are a few 10'' plus grammodes here. Ruck had one that was amazing.
Grammodes definitely take forever to grow, so you still have time. They are just mean SOB's so you never know when they may snap.

I have removed the vieja and now just have the jag and a gold spot pleco in there. The tank has pretty good filtration so should be fine on that side of things but ever since I removed the Vieja the jag has gone into hiding. She only comes out to eat and just stays under a log and seems like the only reason she ever used to come out was to stalk the vieja. Is this normal? or will she come out a bit more when she gets a little bigger and more confident.

I thought I stunted my female jag years ago, back then we had the pair together and they were breeding at least monthly for no less than a year, we would just keep the eggs in there and let them diminish because of the community they were in. After not breeding for a while she absolutely started growing again and now is 13'' long. I honestly think with time the stunted breeding size can be reversed with proper care and room. She put on weight first and then slowly started growing again. I would not keep her with another large cichlid like this because she will still drop eggs and protect them without a male around. Jags are prolific breeders. In a tank that size I would maybe consider something smaller overall. I kept my female with a grammode for a while without problems they can handle their own and stay under 6''.

How long did it take for your female to get to this size?

Within the next couple of years she got to her full potential. She could be shy from you netting the vieja out and now shes alone too. you could keep a male convict in there or maybe a salvini?

i think they will be fine mate, its down too the particular fish, they probably wont exceed 12 inches each ime.

I do have a salvini that is about 3-4" in my other 4ft tank which is causing alot of trouble . I have considered putting her in with the jag but there is a bit of a size difference seeing the jag is 5-6".

I am now considering getting a convict but am guessing it will be best if I get the biggest one I can? The female jag seemed to feel a lot more secure with another fish in the tank and ever since it has been on its own it has been in hiding and barely comes out.
