Male 100%, if you just got him then he'll have the line from stress. Females almost always have their vent sticking out after 4 inches, and the line, spots, and coloration are much different. Also, males (from my experience) get a slanted forehead.

Thank you everyone for your opinions. I think I will settle on the male verdict unless something happens like he lays eggs. He is taking large scoops of gravel and spitting them up along the sides of the tank and eating like a pig, so it looks like we are doing good so far. He hates my big dog for some reason. Every time he passes by the jag flares up the gills and starts swimming back and forth against the glass.

Looks male too me. The purple/ blue tint on the fines and the spot just pop out more then a female
