Jag growth thread....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have heard Dan's Honduran Jags are really nice too. I had a pair of Honduran Jags I bought privately and they were very nice.

I have a bunch of Jag info written down from a few years ago when I was really breeding and into researching collection points. Let me see what I can dig up and I will post what I find.

It would be neat to see but I am a definite fan of the natural colors.

The problem is probably finding enough stock to breed with the same color traits. From what I know of breeding Parachromis, the inbreeding causes deformities early on in subsequent generations. (Fellow breeders, correct me here if I'm misguided) Many of the pet store Jags seen today are inbred and hence, we have lost some of the natural body lines and see a huge variation in color, pattern, and defects. Inbreeding can produce great colors and "super" fish if done correctly, but then the challenge is to find a pair who consistently produces high quality offspring. Then the issue of gene dilution arrises because you may not be able to breed back to the same gene pool. EBJD's sometimes have deformities as a result of this kind of thing, especially when poorly done. It's a long and detailed process but I'm sure someone with the space, time, and money can do it. My take on it anyway lol

I think I read a post/article by Mo Devlin where he said green hued jags are from the Mosquito Coast? But, Dan at CoA said that's the collection point for ones he sells, and they're black and gold with a blue hue on tbe fins.

Yeah that is exactly what I read. I would love to get a hold of one of the those. In all honestly I'll probably end up getting a group from coa. I gave up my Honduran male to rescue some petshop nics this guy had in small tanks. I agree with the above statement with inbreeding as these jags look cool, but have defects along with weird ass behavior. I had to euthanize one due to this weird spinal defect that was getting worse and the other is just stupid. Nothing really close to normal jag behavior.

Not to down anyone's pet shop jags or anything just my 2c on the subject

The difference between my male Honduran and LFS male is huge. I don't even post pics of the LFS Jag.

Thanks ....I would like the update but I still can't post pics..... The largest female offspring and the second largest are looking pretty good though.... Check out page 7 of this thread for pics of the parents... And of my 4 off spring Jags I may yet have 1 male... It's the second smallest and stays dark all the time......
