Jag info needed

I have 4 Jack Dempsey's (3 regular, 2 are female 1 male and 1 male EBJD) and 3 Texas with a Jag. The Jag chases my 1 female Dempsey and all 3 Texas. For me the funniest part with my Jag is how wide it flares it's gills when it's angry. I've only seen it (I'm sure it happens more than I see) nip at the fish a couple times. Mostly just chases though. You wouldn't be sorry getting yourself some Jags. Skittish when small, but they grow into some beautiful fish as well as entertaining. They will sometimes throw temper tantrums if you don't feed them what they want or like. I wish I had a 180 gallon tank and get a couple more to grow out and hope for a pair with the one I have.

I have a 10" Jag-- bought him at 8" from someone on ebay- She said that he killed everything that she put in the tank.. he was in a 55.

I took him home, kept him in a 55 for a bit. Introduced a Senegal Bichir... the bichir wanted to investigate the jag, and the jag just mouthed him to get him away. not wanting to risk a bichir, i removed it.

I then put the jag later on upstairs in my 55 that had the bichir, and my baby RTxTSN- My Jag acted like a wimp! He hid behind a pot, and wouldn't move.

Now I have him in a 125 with the RTxTSN, 3 senegal bichirs, 3 silver dollars, a pleco, an ornate bichir, and an oscar (leaving tomorrow)-- and he's fine.

I have heard that as long as they aren't in the tank first then they tend to be less territorial.

Good luck!

so if you wish you had a 180 then i take it that your housing all those fish in a smaller tank? perhaps a 125 or less. i take it that your fish are not full grown? that sounds like a recipe for a disaster. im surprised the jacks and texas havent killed each other off until they got down to a pair. mixing aggresive cichlids is hard enough let alone trying to keep many of the same cichlid. if these fish are not grown the ebjd will be the first to die and then others until you have 2 jack and 2 texas with 1 jag. then they will spawn in your 125 or smaller tank and fight like hell because there isnt enough room for all the breeding aggression then you will be left with a jag and 2 jacks or 2 texas. at least thats the way i see it playing out.if there fully grown and all getting along fine then you got pretty lucky.

I really think that Jags personalities differ-- I mean, my baby oscar is more aggressive than the Jag-- but If his does end up getting aggressive, I think the Jacks won't last.

I find that Jacks aren't as aggressive as people really say they are. I had 6 in a tank- WITH a breeding pair, and they never had an issue. They seem like they would get bullied first...

In all I think the Texas with take the cake out of all these fish.

But yes... bad idea...

Well, I have 1 male BGJD (about 7"s), 2 female BGJD's (about 4"s each) and the EBJD male (about 7"s as well). My EBJD when he does fight holds his own. But there really is mostly just chasing and gill flaring. I do realize when they get older and fully mature I may have to re home some of them. They're in a 72"x18"x20" tank, which I believe is a 110. I'm not sure of the sex of my Texas. I really don't care if I have to get rid of a couple of those. I do want to wait and see which one turns out nicest and would like to get a good looking male of the 3. I would like a 180 for my Jag and a mate because of how large a male can get. I think they'd be more suited for a 180 than an 18" wide tank.

My BGJD male is the boss of my tank and he can be quite aggressive. With Dempsey's, it really depends on the fish. You may get a very docile laid back one, or you may get a killer one. But that's with any Cichlid.

when your talking about a texas taking the cake possible at equal size but i try to refer to fully grown fish so the jag will hit 13-16 inches while texas will not come close therefore not messing with a mature jag. so a texas is another option for the op

Just purchased a Jag from aquabid. The auction was for two one being free. I requested that only one fish be sent and in the 4 inch range. the fun begins.
