Recently started a few jags and dovii in a grow out. Decided to get the jags first because I couldn't find dovii anywhere a few weeks later I found some nice dovii about the same size and added them. Now at 4 inches one male dovii and one male jag have become dominant. My goal is to end up with a solo male for my 180. After finally finding the dovii I was sure I was going to go dovii but I must say this jag is starting to grow on me really coloring up nicely lots of blue and violet. So now I'm torn I realize the potential the dovii has and how long I searched for one bit this jag is pretty sweet. Any opinions on which way to go? I've never kept either as an adult maybe some of you have.

The jag would live a good life in a 180. A dovii would live an eventual "cramped" one based on their overall final growth size alone. Not to say theyd get 24", but theyd get bigger than a male jag...and definitely more robust usually.

Before you purchased each of these fish and researched them for hours/days/weeks first...did you see what the potential size of a dovii was?

a 180 i believe is 24" wide so hes probably fine for a solo dovii. In a 180 you could have that male jag and some tank mates as well.

Ya I've been keeping fish mainly cichlids for over 10 years I'm aware of adult dovii size as well as that of jag. So ya I've done my research. But I do pickup on the condescending tone of your post. You are correct in saying a 180 is cutting it close for that particular species. My inquiry was pertaining more to personality and opinions as to which looks better from personal experiences. Honestly I could find max size and min tank size in a freshwater atlas and wouldn't need to post on here

Yea, a standard 180g is 24" deep.

Not saying it couldnt work, just saying if you have 2 fish you like equally and one grows to a better fitting size to the biggest tank you can provide, id recommend going for that fish.

I had a 13" dovii in a 7ft 265g tank and he looked maxed out or at least well on his way, especially when hed get grumpy or ready to be fed.

Was he too big for it? I guess if thats judged by his tail hitting back and nose hitting the front, no. He sure looked it to me though. I gave him to someone with a 450g.

I wasnt being condescending at all. Sorry if it came across that way.

The looks/color thing is a personal preference so I dont know what to tell you. Ive had both but had bigger dovii in singles and pairs, spawning and not so Im housing jags right now.

Also, sfter seeing all the improperly housed dovii and all the people that think they can house them in tanks way too small to even be considered bare minimum (75, 90, 120, 125), Im not too supportive of them being so readily available.

You obviously know what it will take to keep one, especially if youre dedicating a 180 to a solo one, so go for whatever you like better. Both have great personalities but both can be hiders for a long period of time as well.

Ya I'm leaning toward jag good info man sorry about above post just see a lot of people get jumped on for trying to keep dovii and went into it ready to defend myself my bad

No problem man. Re-reading it, I can see how it looked smart ass-ish. I just knew, since you were prepared to give a 180g to 1 fish, that you had read plenty on the species.

Right now I have a male jag bigger than any Ive kept before and his personality is like that of an oscar. Ive never had jags in the past that were anywhere near as outgoing as him...so hopefully yours will be the same.

in my experience if your just going on personality and the most entertaining fish to keep I would go Dovii.....no question!!
