Hiya. Apologies for the essay... But thanks for your responses.

So ive approached this before on another forum with very negative results. However these are two different places with a difference in opinions. For example, 80% of everyone there hated hybrids and were not at all openminded, which doesnt seem the case on this forum. I mention this becuase i know certain users have accounts in both places.

So anyways, here is the question. Could a Jag live in a 75, alone? In a tank with good filters, current, aeration, PWC, and all the stuffs that are needed besides.

The reson i ask is this: i bought a 75 because i was informed on several sites that an average sized Jag could live in the tank due to its 18" width. (Otherwise i was going to do a 55) And everytime i ask about jags on the other site i get shot down without any logic behind the statement. I always thought that if a 14" Oscar or Midevil could live in a 75, then why couldnt a Jag? I know they can get bigger, but not always. And it could be a female, as i wouldnt care about gender. I would just pick out a decemt colored one at the LFS. And LFS fish are stuted a bit often as well... Plus Jags frow relatively slow anyways so it takes a while for them to get big

So with all provided, could a Jag live in a 75 for the forseeable future? Maybe not for its entire life, but a couple years at least. Could a male? Or just a female? Or neither...

I've done it

The reason you were getting negative results on other forums is because you were on other forums.

Most fish forums are a joke. This is the only one I have ever liked. I spent YEARS using this forum before I joined because I saw how the other fish forums were nd didn't want any part of their BS

A female Jag could live a long time in a 75, not a male I've seen 16" male jags and they don't look comfortable in 125's. your right about them growing slower but if you end up with a male (because their very hard to sex when small) you might get 12-14 months before he going to need a bigger tank. Just my opinion of course.

Yeah ok. I know a lot of small fish forums are basically just a few people who are set in their ways which is what it was like there... And while i did like a few a bit there where a few more who i didnt. Some people even brought it here.

Im ok with the truth but i want it backed up. You cant just say that they need a bigger tank because they get big... I mean, Oscars can get 18", Midevils to like 16, and Jags usually stay at 18 or less... But how is it that Oscars can live in a 55, and Midevil in a 75, and Jags in a 125? It makes no sensssseeee...

Which is why i like it here because everyone is willing to back up what they say with sources and not just act like a kid who didnt read the book but is still trying to present on it.

Ok i can see that a 16"+ male wouldnt be super comfy, but do they really all get that big?

And i think it would be more that 12 months. From what ive heard, and i do not speak from experience, they usually hit between 7-10" in a year, at which point they would be growing even more slowly than before.

Feel free to tell me experiences about growth rates.

I got my male at around 8" and female around 5, male hit a foot in about 5 months and the female is around 7 or 8 now. They just had their first successful spawn and I'm hoping this will curb the growth rate. All that said, they're in a 75 atm. Has over 1000gph of filtration. I know I'll catch heat but it happened because of an upcoming move and I need the 125 for transferring fish while I set up their tanks at the new place

I got my original 2 pairs at 2" and the females hit 8" in a year, and the males hit 10", but the growth rate after the 1st year was very slow....more growing OUT or TALL than longer...when I sold them at 2 years, she was still only 9-10" and he was like 12, MAYBE 12.5". It's all about genetics....if the parents weren't big, the offspring probably won't be either. If you want to know how big your juveniles will get, try and find out info about the parents 1st.

you see way more jags that are +14" than you do oscars or amphs.

a friend of mine had a monster in a 120 (60x18) and the jag completely dwarfed the tank.
