Jag tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally, I would say that the 75 is not even enough tank for a mature Jag. Especially a male. A female will require all of the 75, leaving no room for any other fish. A male, will take all of the 75 and demand another 50 gallons to boot. Your 75 is not large enough for a Jag and friends.

you can try anything but be prepared to move fish around if problems arise...which they probably will especially if you wind up with a male. imo your chances of a jag and anything else cohabitating in a 75 are very slim.

:iagree: Exactly what I was going to say.

I don't think the bioload will be so much of an issue as will be the territorial and domestic disputes between the jag and another cichlid.

It would depend on the JD's and Jag's attitude. Its really hit or miss. I have a JD and a female Jag coexisting in a 125, they do bicker a lot. The JD is a cave dweller and when he gets a nice cave that he likes the Jag isn't allowed any where close. A fish on the defense in a cave can take on a much larger attacker.

The only problem is that the JD can be too aggressive at times and pick a fight with the bigger jag in open water. bad idea.

My advice is that if you really want to get another cichlid, make sure the pet store will allow you to bring it back if it doesn't get along well with the Jag.

One JD with the jag or one JD alone? Also are Salvini's cave dwellers too?

That's if you're gonna have a JD with the Jag.

The JD is gonna need the protection...like I said before, that's only if your Jag turns out to be a mellow one. Some Jags will not accept tankmates at all in that sized tank. You're gonna need some big hiding spaces if you're gonna keep them in there for life cuz that JD will get at least 8-10+ inches, easy target for an angry Jag in a 75 gallon. A shy JD, may live a life of stress, constantly hiding in the shadows, dull colors etc....if you're lucky, you'll have a bolder JD that can take it and fight back from it's caves. Ugly head sticking out of the cave all the time....looks cool. JD's have some nasty looking red teeth also, so when the fish are younger and similar sized, your JD may even have the upper hand!

Like Rhetor said, the main issue is territory disputes. Alotta Jags like to pick on conspecifics, JD isn't a guapote, but it's body is similar. We are generalizing from eachother's experiences, but you know, it could work...just keep an eye on em, if it doesn't workout, just make sure you can take em back or get another tank.

Yeah I have a 55 gallon that the few tetras remaining are on their towards the big toilet in the sky so if i have any problems with the JD/jag situation I will put the jd in there... Also for the first two months of my owning of the jag it was with some cories that it never touched...
