jags and oscars [compatability]

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you keep the Jag in your 90 until he's 6 inches or so, you might as well kiss your Africans goodbye.

A friend of mine has 2 oscars (about 7.5" each), he added a small jag (about 2") and the oscars killed it over night. However, he added a small Cuban about 2" and they are doing fine. It all depends on the fish. I say if you don't mind give it a try!

I would have thought about this before I bought it to start with but since the deed is done. I would say grow him/her out as well, oscars think they can swallow things that they cant, so chances are he might try and eat it if the size difference is to great.
that is why it is not in the same tank with the oscars right now. he is in a tank with fish that are closer to his size and he is doing fine. im putting a divider in the 125 if he gets too big and mean for the africans before he is big enough to go with the oscars. the size he is right now i might have one o that might pick on him, however im not even going to take that chance. btw i thought about it plenty, saw the fish and thought gotta have it. theres always risk when mixing semi or aggresive fish right. :)

Oscars and Jags have been done before and its just one of those things where the individual fish's personality determines their compatibility.

In a 125 it's definitely possible they'd get along.

I have an Oscar and a Jag together right now. They leave eachother alone. (Oscar is 10", Jag is 3" :grinno: )

from my experiences as long as the oscar is the larger, but not too large to swallow the jag you should be ok.

i tried it and it didnt work, put two jags in with my 5 oscars in a 268gal, hoping the two jags would keep eachother busy. they did but not busy enough, my oscars took a beating, threw out the jags and peace was restored.

I got a Jag and Oscar together right now. They tend to leave each other alone. But like everyone says...it depends on the fish's personality. Good Luck

im my exp oscar tend to be more docile just big eater's but jag are really smart fish one of the smartest and with that comes diff personality's my jag is 9 lives wit 8''midas,13'' pike, pair of 6-7'' jd,6''salvini,6'' gt,8''pleco and 3 3'' red finned loaches he is real laid back stoner but will react to me very neat but my buddy's killed everything but the clown loaches so it varys but they should be fine as long as he is not small enough to be swallowed
