A friend of mine has a tank that is 60x18x20 and keeps some polys and some gourami's, plus a few odds and sods. Anyway a shop near us told him it would be ok to get rid of everything except for the polys and a jag would be perfectly fine mixing with them.. I said "NO CHANCE" but he is for some silly reason inclined to go with their advice. Well he's sitting next to me as i write this and i would like very much to hear all your comments on this, just so i can tell him never to listen to the shop again!!
Polys are 2x laps and are about the same size as the ones in my sig.

Let the flaming begin!!! Lol

I've had plenty of experience with both Jags and bichirs and the latter never get any kind of attention from the cichlids, positive or otherwise. Cichlids simply ignore bichirs, in my experience at least. I think it would work. Male Jags usually do not exceed 40cm in length (and females are generally smaller), although there certainly are exceptions, but I still feel it's doable.

Not sure why there would be flaming. As long as the Bichirs are not small enough to get eaten the jag is most likely going to completely ignore them. The largest majority of the time bichirs are completely ignored by cichlids. Every once in a while it might not work, but it's like that with every cichlid.

Sounds like a nice tank to me. A nice big jag with plenty of room as the show fish and some poly's to and something interesting on the bottom.

I had this combo before and it worked out fine. Of course, my bichirs were bigger and the jag was a female.

it could work, but it might not. ive heard stories of dovii getting along with polys but oscars killing a plec twice their size so it depends on the individual fish more than the species

I used to keep Jags and bichirs together. It's as if the bichirs weren't even there as far as the Jags were concerned...and vice versa.

Ill be trying this soon, i am getting 1x 4" Albino P. Senegalus in 2 weeks. Then 2-5days after that i will be getting 5x 1-2" Jags and when there is a confirmed pair i will throw out the rest of the Jags, if that doesnt go well in the 125 i will put the Sen in another tank.

i have a 15" male jag and he gets along splendidly with my 8 in ornate, and 6 in sengalas

it can work...just depends on his personality

Is that a sev with your jag? If so what size tank are they in?
If i could keep a jag with mine i'd be stoked.... However i'm not getting rid of my sevs though :)

And as for the initial reason for starting this thread, well thanks for making me look the fool!! Lol

Live and learn :D
