JAGS BREEDING AGAIN.........

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the advice Riskistang. It sounds like you have had some great success with your jags.

I managed to move the male jag into the female's tank this morning. It made for some good entertainment today. The male was happy to get into the larger tank and see the female again. They have been apart since about June when I found the male shredded to pieces. The male has since grown up and managed to gain a pile of spunk and confidence.

The female got a little frisky with all the wild gill flaring. The male held his own and showed he wasn't going to back down. The lip locking was pretty wild. They were locked up for a few 5 minute sessions. The male gained control of the tank and was moving the female all about. He showed signs of being really interested, but the female was a bit stressed out. The male started fanning a few of the flat rocks I have in the tank. I need to pick up some slate, but hopefully the flat rocks will work. The female had cleared a big section of gravel away last week, so there is some clear glass in the back.

I switched up some water this morning and raised the temperature. I guess I'll see if anything has happened when I get to work tomorrow morning.

Sounds great man....If you want to get some slate for cheap....Hit up the Home Depot 3'x3' for like 3 bucks...take a hammer to it and make your own sizes....

Here are a few shots of the fry free swimming...2 days old....

I'll try to pick up some slate at Home Depot. Thanks for the idea. Great pictures of your new batch of fry.
My jags were busy moving gravel all over the place today. The male has been behaving for the most part in that the beatings of the female have been less severe. The female was looking a lot more interested in the male. I have the water temp at 78 degrees and the jags were not interested in feeding at all today. I guess they have other things on their minds.

I'll see if they got frisky when I get back to work tomorrow morning. I'll keep you posted.

Try to feed them a little more....because when they lay and hatch the eggs....they really dont eat....they are on defense 24/7....So I get @50 guppies/rosey and let them pig out on them....they they are nice and fat...nothing better to do after you got a full belly but to work it off :naughty:

Thanks for the compliments on the pics....they could be better....

My jags finally did the deal this morning at around 9:20. The female laid eggs for about 3 hours. It was pretty wild to watch her completely cover one of the flat rocks. She covered all the sides as well. The male passed over the eggs and slowly fanned them after the female dropped some. I just hope that male was able to fertilize at least some of the hundreds of eggs that are there.
I guess the eggs should hatch in a few days if they were successfully fertilized.
I'll hope for the best and see what happens.

It is pretty intense to see how protective they are of the eggs with all the gill flaring.

THATS GREAT! GLAD I COULD HELP YOU OUT

The parents should pick them off the rocks within the next 48 hours and put them into a pile as they start to hatch....you can see them start to move...

They the next day you will see them move around a bit then start swimming around....

The parents are very protective...If you have any tank mates....I feel sorry for them...cuz they are mean....so if you can move the other fish.....

by this time next week....They will be feeding size :naughty: :WHOA:

Congrats on the baby Jags :woot: I was wondering if the Jags were a pair since you got them or were you able to introduce one to the other? I have a 6" male and was thinking of getting him a woman! But I'm afraid that he just might go trailer trash on her and beat the crap out of her.

I had bought 4 of them...and go rid of teh 2 other males.....bought when they 1" to the present sizes now.....

Where are you from...I think I might want to sell mine....

Thanks for the info Riskistang. The jags are in their own tank and only get pissed off when I look too closely. The male gets a glance of a dovii I have in an another tank and gets all excited every once in a while.

How often do you try feeding your pair of jags when they are guarding their eggs and fry?

I know my pair have not been interested in feeding the last few days. I was wondering if a few small golden shiners could be used to feed the pair. The male would probably destroy them as quickly as he normally does.
