Jags that mean?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IME, jags probably have the most variable range of temperments of almost any c.a. cichlid. The only general trend is that most jags aren't complete pushovers, they don't really take much crap from other fish, but alot aren't outwardly aggressive unless provoked. I've had some very peaceful jags who lived fine with firemouths, jds, etc, and other jags who were mean to the point of beating up a same sized male dovii and citrinellus, killing my male motaguesis, killing various pike cichlids, target/dither fish, etc.

I do have a few things to think about now! One minute I dont want one and the next I think it may all work out fine. I should have my new 200g up in running this weekend, so maybe in 2 or 3 weeks I'll get one and see what happens, if all else fails, I will still have the 90g as a back up, or perhaps someone on this site would liike a fee one.

I would like to thank all of you for your info, it has been real helpful!

Jags are a blast. I have a breeding pair of jags (about 9" long) that have given me some excitement in the last month with their first successful spawn. The female is now a splash machine. She attacks my hand and raises hell anytime I come near the tank. It is pretty funny to how excited she can get. I have to eventually remove the fry from the tank and place them in another tank. I have 6 other jags ranging in size from 3 to 6 inches. Four of these guys are in a tank together and there is constant brawling.

Good luck with your fish and enjoy your jag if you pick one up.

Like everyone says...a Jag's temperment will be determined by the fish itself. I have a Jag that was mauled to the point where it had no tail fin by a Pearl Gourami. Well...that Jag grew just about a 1/4" and all Hell broke loose. He killed the Gourami and the other Jag I bought with it and grew back it's tail fin. It got big enough to put the the big tank and was the smallest of all. He proceeded to beat up on my JD that was twice his size. Then everyone started beating up on my JD. So I had to give up my JD :( Now my Jag lives pretty peacefully with all the fish except for the Walking Catfish. They get into it on rare occassions :D

I have a 4" Jag. He hits any fish smaller than him like a torpedo. I have him with an Oscar of comparable size...probably a little larger and they do fight sometimes but the Oscar is able to keep the Jag at bay. I believe that a Jag will do fine in your tank as long as he is smaller than the other fish and the territories are already staked out.
