Jags with eggs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's now been about 48 hours since the eggs were laid. The Jags are definitely getting more aggressive towards the Severum, keeping him in the far corner. A few of the eggs have turned white and the female picks those off the driftwood. They take turns patrolling and fanning the eggs. Also it looks like they are digging another pit behind the driftwood. Do Jags put the wrigglers in a pit like other egglayers?

wow, congrats dude! i just recently bought a few baby jags with the intention of breeding them. now, i'm even more excited after seeing those pics...

Alas! Almost 3 days since they laid the eggs. Most of the eggs now have a white fungus growing over them. A few eggs are still clear and the Jags still seem to be watching them and are cruising back and forth between a second pit they have dug. Can't see any wigglers in the new pit so maybe they are just practicing in case they get a few. One fish is always with the eggs and the second fish will be at the pit. The female seems to initiate the switch by cruising over to the male and then he goes to the vacant spot left by the female. Fun to watch even though there may not be any fry this time.

Since my last post last night the Jags have about 50 wrigglers in a pit. Most of the fungused eggs have disappeared since last night and they are still watching the few clear eggs left on the side of the driftwood. Both fish are still alternating between the 2 sites but mamma Jag is starting to spend more time with the wrigglers now. Even the male is pretty focused. He's not even begging for food which is totally out of character for him! Lol. His single life is over!! Lol. Green Severum gets about 6" x6" space in the 110gal tank. The Jags don't beat on him but if he leaves his small space they chase him right back. Sorry can't get any pictures right now because the wriggler's hiding spot is well, uh....hidden. If the wrigglers get to the swimming stage I will get some shots.

Congrats. You are going to have a ton of babies.
