If the room where the tank is in gets good lighting during the day, I would just leave the tank lights off. Unless it is a planted tank.

Don't block him from his spot, that'll just stress him. Right now he's probably just getting used to the tank. Give it time and he'll come out of his shell. He'll figure out that you are the one with the food lol.

At this point in time the worst thing you could do is force him out of his comfort zone.

This is correct.

Also, JDs from what I have seen are big chickens when they are smaller (like many fish) and so they like to hide a lot, especially if there are bullies. As long as the fish is eating you should let him be.

JD's? (typo?)

Yeah yesterday I put in 2 dozen rosies and his came out of the spot to eat and he ate two, ever since he hasn't gone back in! BTW he wasn't eating before.

Forget the feeders and get him started on pellets asap. It may be difficult at first but you have to train him.

very much agree with this. give OSI Blood red parrot pellets a try if you can.

ive had amazing luck for some reason with that one brand getting finicky eaters, or fish used to live foods to eat. no clue on earth why, but its always worked good for my fish.
