Hello, i recently decided to try and breed jaguar cichlids, i have a 125 gallon setup with a fluval 406 and an aquaclear 110, i bought 4 baby jags ranging from 2 to 3.5 inch( 2 from one store 2 from another), in the tank theres the 4 jags and 4 texas cichlid (same size about, will take out eventually) , just wanted to know if theres a good chance ill get a breeding pair of jags????

I personally would say yes but no guarantee until the group of 4 matures and 2 of them pair off.

That is pretty much what I did when I spawned them. I bought picked the two smallest and the two largest out of the group. Then I put them into a 150 gallon tank and kept them fed. It didn't take long before I saw two hanging out at the surface being bothered by the pair. As soon as I got them out I had more fry than I could have wanted. The breeders were probably 5-6 inches when they spawned the first time. It was probably 3 months after I bought them. I did feed pretty aggressively though.

No special water parameters were needed. My well is pretty hard and my pH runs 7.5-8. Have fun I love Jags they are a beautiful fish.

Thankyou both very much for the answers they were literally everything i wanted to hear lol

I guess worst case if all male or female maybe jag/ texas hybrids lol

You have a good chance, the breeding pair of jags that I used to have (10 yrs ago lol) were two of my fav fish I had ever owned. My male was about 15 inches and my female was about 9 inches. My male was a bruiser. He wouldnt even let me into the tank to clean it, I would have to block him with a net. He would occasionally yank off inlet and outlet tubes and pull the heater off the back of the aquarium.

Hey, just an update on the jags, 2 of them did pair off and have fry about a week ago, im super excited set up a 45 for the fry that im currently cycling, just wondering how long until o could take the fry out??

Congrats! ☺ You could take some out if you want, personally I would let them be until 1.5. I suggest leaving them with the parents so they can gain experience.

Thanks for the help, im gonna try and leave them on for like 3 weeks to a month or so
