Hello all.. im new to the hobby as well as the site and already love both.. im currently in the stage researching what type of fish i would like to try and keep for the duration of their entire lifespan... I was researching and came across jaguar cichlids and I found myself struck by the beuty of this fish.. now ive done plenty of research on them online but I never know how accurate their information is.. SO Im seeking advice from somebody who HAS previously or currently kept one of these fishes.. I would appreciate hearing everything anyone had to say on them I.E How fast is their growth rate, at what ages should i feed them what, how big they will grow.. how much they cost, and how diffacult are they to find

p.s if anyone from michigan reads this and knows where to come across these fish let me know where please

Also was wondering if i could have a tankmate IF i got the tankmate bigger for example an electric blue jack dempsey thats a couple inchers bigger from the start? and how hardy are jaguar cichlids? are they diffacult to care for or are they pretty easy?

Welcome to MFK!

growth rate is around an inch a month the first 6-10 months, then usually slows down considerably unless housed with just a partner or solo in a LARGE tank

always feed them a good pellet (NLS/Hikari) with fresh shrimp, earthworms or ghost shrimp for treats weekly or monthly

males generally 12"-16" under optimal conditions, but Id say most Ive seen on here and online top out around 12-14"-ish

they cost whatever youll pay. Ive seen fry for $8 and $15, adults from $20 -$100. Depends on how in demand they are. (Right now on aquabid.com there is a 14" male for $20 I believe..in Arizona)

Right now, Im having a HELL of a time finding a female for my male. Ive asked every vendor on MFK and several people known for having more than a few specimens and I still cant get 100% confirmation that I can get one.

Personally, I dont have any true LFS's around, so I almost always order online from reputable vendors in the MFK marketplace here

most of these guys have great reputations, great stock and can get something if they dont have it.

I particularly recommend:

Tangled up in Cichlids
The Wish List
Cichlid Connection

all great vendors with great stock.

NO to EBJD. they are timid, weak and passive. They will get killed by a jag at some point...and if the tank isnt huge, most tank mates wont work out in the long run, just like with most parachromis.

jags are hardy & easy to care for. Just do at least 50% water changes weekly on a suitable tank sized for them, feed them a good pellet and stay away from feeder fish .

For more info on parachromis managuense, try the search function here on MFK. There are thousands of threads on EVERYTHING about them.

They are extremely aggressive and are best in an aquarium by themselves unless you have a very large tank. the largest i have seen was a 14-15 inch male but i have heard stories of up to 20 inches in the wild. Jaguar cichlids are very common and you probably wont have any troubles finding them. If you get a male, you will eventually need a large tank, when it reaches 12 inch+ a tank with 72 inch length will be ideal. I used to feed my male a mix of krill, pellets and shrimp. My Mana was certainly one of the most personable cichlids i have kept, it constantly tried to attack me through the glass and chased me as i walked by the tank. good luck with finding the right cichlid for you and if you choose the Managuense i hope that you enjoy keeping it as much as i did.

BTW welcome to MFK

thank you for your answers and VRWC you seem to know a great deal about these fish.. could you or anyone for that matter tell me the difference between males and females and which one looks better as they mature?

Thanks...and Ive had them before, but not for any extended period of time. They always hid or got beat up by other tank mates and had to be removed from the tanks they were in and I always just re-homed them. Im trying again though now and have gotten rid of everything but the lone male I have...and spoke with someone this morning that is going to be sending me a female Honduran to spawn him with, so Im very happy, as well as some members here that will hopefully be getting the fry they want.

If you really want some good info, pics and true expertise, look at AquaMojos threads. Hes the resident expert around here.

Heres a link to a picture thread of his Jags:

and heres a link to all of his threads, the majority being picture threads of all his fish past and present:

You can decide for yourself which you like fully matured. I prefer the male.

all fish are different but my female was scared of everything until she hit about 5 inches when she turned into a ***** and killed 3 giant danios, a silver dollar and i believe she would of killed much more if i hadnt of moved her immediatly to another tank. If you plan on having them with other fish, if you dont have another tank have a good devider on hand. they grow quickly too, i got her at 1.5 and she has grown to 6.5-7 inches in under 4 months but she has been in a fairly large tank since i got her, i have fed mine on mainly a hikari pellet with a treat once or twice a week such as bloodworm, shrimp and crickets. Hope that helps and good luck with your jag
