jaguar cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sarah, I think the fish in the avatar above is a Parrot Cichlid (the SA parrot, not the hybrid). Could be wrong. And BTW, for a single Jag a 75 would do. Of course a 125 or 150 would be better, but not absolutely necessary. I used to breed my pair in a 55 when the male was 9" and the female was 6". No problem.

yeah, its a true parrot, not mine though, i found that pic online, i cant take anywhere near that good of fish pics. I do have one though lol

thanks flowerpower thats what i was thinking but wasnt positive and he was asking what would be tank for full grown jags yes those smaller tanks could work for a little while but if the OP wants to house a pair for life in one tank then i would suggest 125 for them to be comfortable as others have said as well

There is a lot to considered when thinking about the proper tank size for a jag.

if u buy a juvi(s) a 60g would be cool for a few months if u were planning on keeping all of them. a single fish would be good for a little longer. If u so happen to get a female and kept it solo a 60 would work for a couple of years.

A MALE solo (depending on how much u fed him) would prolly need something around a 90g(wide) at the least SOLO for a couple years as they tend to get a lot bigger faster than females.

A smaller breeding pair would work in a 100(5 foot wide, not tall) but i would highly recomend having a divider ready as males tend to be wife beaters around pre & post spawning time. a larger pair would obviously need a larger tank.

i really wouldnt recommend having large adults in a community tank any less than a 180 ( and that varies on the tankmates)

Sub adults notheing less than a 125 community.

SORRY for the long post. I LOVE THIS family of fish and any info i can share with someone looking to venture into keeping them i want to share !:headbang2 GLHF!

i got a couple of jags from my local petsmart labled under the name maganese. of course one survied a male. he lived in a 55 for about a year before i got a 125 and a female they were fine with no decor. they laid egg a few times also

75 gallons minimum by themselves. I have a big guy that is 14 inches. He is in a community 240 now.

You can keep 1 jaguar cichlid in a 75 it's whole LIFE! But If you want a pair..180 and up. I've seen people keep them in 55's by them self's which is sad..but a 55 with a jag 1 to 5 inches with Convicts and dempsey's his size would be ok..for a year!

a female would be able to be kept in a 75 for life. a male would be ok in a 75 once it got up to a foot, then upgrade to a 180 for the extra width. a pair would be ok in a 125 just as stated, up until the male hit around a foot then upgrade for the width.
