Hello all I have bought my very first Jaguar and wanted to know some info about them. LFS owner is not worth talking to lol so I wanted to ask some people on here. I have placed him in a 70 gallon tank alone. Is this big enough or will he need more room??? best foods to feed???? best deco for tank??? best water parems??? I am not a newbie to fish I have been doing it for years. right now I have Oscars, Convicts, Texas, Green Terror, and Discus

First of all, WELCOME TO MFK!

The Same water paramaters as your other big cichlids will be fine. However, he will eventually need more room. mine is 15" right now, I would feel bad having him in a 70. try to go 100 or bigger if you can eventually. Keep a close eye on him if he is going in with any of your other cichlids, it will get more agressive with size and age.
Mine feeds mainly on shrimp, some pellets, beefheart, earthworms, and occasionally super worms.
For decoration go with rocks and driftwood, and he will probably hide untill he gets larger.. Goodluck with your new fish! Jags are one of my favorites.

Rallysman pretty much covered it. jags are awesome fish and you should be very happy with him. :D what are the dimensions of your 70 gallon? chances are if it's a male then like the others have said you'll probably want to get him into a bigger tank when he gets bigger. if it's a female you may be able to keep her in there for life. :)

Congratulations on a new jaguar!!! They are a great pet, very aggressive and gets a good size. Enjoy your fish at the moment and dont worry about your 70gallon. You can keep him in there for quite a while. You can easily keep a male jaguar in a 75gallon tank. But a bigger tank is always good for "any fish".
I have a male 12" jaguar in a divided 125gallon and its perfect for him at the moment.

Errr...!! yeah what he said!

My 11" male Jag is quite happy at the moment in a 90 gallon but one day I will probably move him if I build a real monster tank.

Food:I feed mine a high protein, high energy, low carbohydrate aquaculture diet as a staple food but introduce earthworms and shrimps too. I find fish can get fussy if they only get one or two types of food. They then ignore other foods. This happens more I think when they are kept alone. Housing them with other fish would make them take more variety I believe (competitiveness). I'm still trying to get mine to take more variety.

Decor: I went with Pool Sand, Driftwood and some rocks and currently I am even having success in keeping some Jungle Val and Onion Plants alive. They seem well rooted and he doesn't seem to bother them-he has his cave and he just keeps it excavated right to the glass bottom. Visually I really like the look of a Jag against the Val, Driftwood, Sand and rock.

Temp: He's not fussy-77 to 80 is where I keep it.

Water Quality: I do at least one 50% water change a week and sometimes an extra 25%.

Oxygen: What I found was when I rigged up a degassing/Aerator box which is positioned after my biofilter it improved the oxygen levels dramatically. The biofilter is healthier, the plants are doing better and the Jag seems more active and responsive for the most part.

So far so good...Good luck with your Jag!, they are awesome:thumbsup:
