Jaguar cichlids spawned...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not to jack this thread but does anyone know when the fry start to eat? mine have spawned for the first time and they are about 10 days old, from time of fertilized, and i have about 200 in a fry tank by themselves

They can eat as soon as they finish their egg sacks. I started with "First Bites" Any LPS should have it. I also feed them "Frozen Cichlid Delight" which is a ground up mixture of SOMETHING <lol> that they absolutely love. The Frozen cichlid delight also helped the fry put on "weight" and they grew really quickly.

Thanks VAFishLover for that info...to hear that you experienced
the male being that highly involved in egg/ fry care gives me at least some hope...mine has parental instincts that have kicked in that i have never noticed to that extent on any other male cichlids ......time will tell if he will have success hatching the eggs without the female participating....Dial92.... i know that has been written and videoed by Mo Devlin on how jag fry eat the slime coat off the parents as their first or one of their first foods and that the parents signal them and hold still for them to do it...and i believe he said the nutrition they get from it makes them grow faster..so if you can you may want to leave the fry with the parents longer..

Here's an update.. The male did all the egg care fanning the eggs for the last 3 days straight on his own.... I checked earlier today and the eggs have hatched right on schedule.. I have non swimming wigglers at this point... The female is on the other side hiding under her pvc pipe.. but she will come out if she thinks I'm going to feed... The male has not eaten for over 4 days ...When the female swims in the open the male chases her away . The male will not even allow the female near the wigglers ... He does not continue the chase because he doesn't leave them for long... If it continues to go as it is and the hatchlings continue to grow I do not believe the female will be involved in their care and it looks like I'll need to be prepared to put the divider back up when they become free swimming..... Any thoughts or suggestions or opinions welcome.....

Update...male moved what are now developed into pre swimming fry to the corner behind his pvc pipe...i had to place a complete plexi glass divider as he was aggressively attacking the female to the point that if left would have killed her...fry should be swimming tomorrow....

congrats a little update on my end i have 150 or so fry in the grow out tank left probably 50-100 fry with parents and after becoming free swimming they were gone in about a day. this is so because there is two dovii with them. sorry to hear about you having to separate the parents. after the fry in the tank with the parents were gone my male went nuts on my female and she went to the dovii's side of the tank where now she stays being protected by my male dovii which isnt afraid to put the male jag in its place. check out my thread dovii breeding grounds for pictures

Thanks Dial92... I put plexiglass divider to keep the female safe from the male then once on the other side of a divider she holds her ground of course ...they bite at each other through the divider.. And the main reason is that when fry get close to divider the female stalks follows them and try to eat them ..there's room along the edges and fry get through and then she gets them. The fry don't know any better they go near their mother who snaps them up like popcorn.. The male goes ballistic and crashes into the divider trying to get at her.. I moved the female into another tank to calm things down .. My female was only an egg donor
