jaguar colour

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My jags stayed dark, almost black until they were going to spawn at about 4-5 inches. then the colors came out.

Thanks all, and beautiful jags! Regarding sex I am leaning towards male...the pic is very deceiving....he/she had a belly full of food there plus its a strange angle....in reality it's very elongated with a flat stomach when not full of food lol, also very bold and aggressive for size, already dominated my female adult Nicaraguan cichlid, and even stands up to my big adult male convict who runs the tank along with my 5/6 in brasiliensis.....

My jag was dark for a long time maybe even like 4" then she finally got her typical coloration. i also was just growing one out for a friend and he was dark, still is, and is only around 3" or so.
Heres a pic of my female in the background.

beautiful female!! here is a better profile pic of mine...unfortunately looking rather full again after pigging out, but you can see the shape better...he/she has a long quite pointed anal fin and quite impressive dorsal.

Pics of my jags before and after spawning...male tending fry..female after he chased her away

Female regained some of her glow after i placed a divider to keep the male from terminating her...cichlidfan78 as you already noted jag color is much dependant on their mood and situation...your jag also appears to me to be female

That's a male, females don't get patterning that distinct.

thanks for all the help and pics! I had to take my largest geophagus brasiliens out two days ago due to him really hammering my little jag! he took a couple of good sized bites out of "her" sides....have to say though that after two days "she" is looking VERY well! the colour has blossomed a lot! and "she" is now a nice gold colour for the most part and has some lovely patterning coming through! "she" is also getting surprisingly brave! there is a lot of patterning on the lower half also for the most part....which I have read is often a male trait? I just tried to get a little video but "she" darkened up as soon as she noticed! grrrr....will link it here in a moment anyway....also "she" is absolutely pounding food and getting rather fat! so am reducing feedings somewhat now lol.
