I just have a couple questions about mixing these cichlids.
I've just recently taken up a great interest in central americans.

I just bought a small 3 inch firemouth, which I have with my red tail cat in my 70g.

The firemouth looks kinda lonely so I just have a couple stocking questions. The problem isn't so much the size of the tank, because I know that I will eventually need upgrades.

So would I be able to get a male GT with a few jags ? THe jags are only 3 for 5.99 at my LFS but they are only about 1 inch ..

Would I be able to throw in say, 4 gold severums in with them, and maybe another firemouth to form a pair ?

I'm pretty novice when it comes to cichlids in general. lol, please don't flame me if my questions yield pretty obvious answers. lol

You are talking about a 200-300 gallon tank at least with all the fish mentioned. Agression wise it might work with no breeding pairs. In a 70 I would add one GT to what you have. If it is a female Jag you might get away with that and a tankmate in a 70. What you can do in a 70 really depends on what size you will be upgrading to. For 3-4 months all those fish might be fine in the 70. Once maturity hits you will have some trouble. Good Luck.

I say do it because its your fish tank do what watever you please to satisfy you ( its your tank you're looking at) besides you still got a long way with those jags and i mean along way. Even tho 95% of the people here will say you're overcrowding but seriously how many big monsters bought from A LFS do you see grow to its full potential? rarely never do because fishes belong in the wild with big rivers/lakes etc and i'm sure 1-2% of MKFs can do this. I say 70 is good for now. If you know you're going to take better care of the fish than the LFS go for it. Its just my opinion

Bloody hell. Are you freaking serious, pal? People start these thread's in first place to receive the correct information as to whether what they want to do is realistc, and you go and blurt out that shiit. Unbelievable!!! The aim of most hobbist's whom frequent these forum's is to keep happy and healthy specimen's. Not damaged fish with broken self esteem's.

To answer your question as to how many fish we see reach their full potential in aquaria is. If they are kept in the right condition's all. Problem is alot people have your opinion. "It's my tank, i'll do as i please."

Bunny, I don't know the dimension's of your tank, but a Green terror could live quite happily and stay healthy in that tank for life (providing the proper care, ofcourse). Adding even one Managuense is going to cause problem's a few month's down the track, not a good idea. If you had an extra tank (of suitable size) avaliable in this period of time, then yes, it would be well suited as a grow out for both the Green terror and the Jag's. Severum's will not mix well with either species and Red tail cat's get way to large for a 70g.

In summing up. Until such times as a larger tank is in your pocession, a Green terror, aswell as a pair of Firemouths would be the way to go IMHO.

As i said "if you know you can provide better care for the fish go for it". Lol are you kidding me? its more like 95% of the people here don't think like me and like you. You act like i don't care for fishes
Chill out man

the RTC is already too big for that tank.

I strongly agree with Marc280106-the RTC alone will need atleast 500 gallons plus and will eventually devour your cichlids-I personally would get rid of the RTC unless you plan to buy a really really really huge tank!

Ditch the red tail catish, they grow to 4'+, very quickly and VERY few hobbyists even on this site, have the proper tank or pond to keep these guys.

The firemouth looks kinda lonely so I just have a couple stocking questions. The problem isn't so much the size of the tank, because I know that I will eventually need upgrades.

No ,...this is a big mistake in the makeing, jags hit 13-15" in captivity, and Saum are decently sized aswell. upgrade to a 240 8' tank, and than you may be able to keep those fish, provided there aren't aggresion and territory problems, which there probably will be.

Would I be able to throw in say, 4 gold severums in with them, and maybe another firemouth to form a pair ?

No...Read above^^^, plus your sev's and FM's would get the liveing crap beat out of them. Jag aren't always flat out aggresive, but little fish don't work well at all.

I'm pretty novice when it comes to cichlids in general. lol, please don't flame me if my questions yield pretty obvious answers. lol

...

Weedamese-I know what your trying to say It's your tank do what you want-but we need to be responsible and give good advice-saying to just put whatever you want is kind of irresponsible-don't you think-especially when it concerns a RTC with Cichlids-the original OP says he/she will eventually upgrade but what are the chances he/she will be able to upgrade and get a tank large enough for a RTC-plus the cichlids will be devoured and the OP will lose money.
