Jaguar Guapote

Damn it guys. Why do u make me wonder about what's certainty? I'm sure she's a female... She's usually light golden. Rarely becames darker. And she is so dominated by the male JD although she's around 1-1.5 cm bigger (around 0.75") than him. I was wondering if you can tell me more about my Jag. Like what kind of sp. is it. I hear there are more slightly different sp. with different body patterns .... from different rivers. Anyone?

Normal everyday common captive bred jag. Yours is 100% male with out a doubt in my mind. I'll post a pic of my pair. You'll see the difference between male and Female as everyone was saying. These pictures are very very good to base off of if you have a male or female.

Mine are Wild Caught Nicaraguan Jags from Lago. So You can see the difference between Captives and WC. Your's wild coloration has dissapated but that DOES NOT MEAN a Captive jag cannot be beautiful and you do have a VERY nice MALE managuense.

How to sex them is simple. Don't go by fins or any of that baby BS everyone tells you. Females will have a Large nub called an Ovipositor. It's shaped like a triangle and for a 9 inch fish like you say yours is it should hang out about 1/4" down and about 1/4" wide. Males will have a small Papilla hanging down that just looks like a small tube rather than Triangular shape.

Another way if you are uncertain which will be almost never needed if you understand the above statement.. is coloration. Females can get very colorful and have quite remarkable marks and colors but males will almost always have darker colors ( as seen in my pics) Also males will usually more often than females have speckaling going down pass the lateral line ( As seen in Pics) Females will also have more prominant yellow markings like the black markings of a male on her gill plate. Males also get much larger than Females but there has been exceptions to this rule. Many think my 13 inch jag is male because it's big but thats about average size for an ADULT female of 5 years. Males can get up to 16"+ Most common is 15" after 3-4years then from 4-7 years 16".

Hope I helped.

Thanks, Ron. I apreciate the explanation although I dunno what to say about my Jag. I know the stuff you told me about .... the genital papilla and the colouration and stuff. But "she" is not that dark as a male seems to be. "She's" rather halfway between your male and your female's colouration. Also, I can't find any shades of blue, green specific to male Jags and that horizontal line is quite obvious sometimes. And she is totally submited to my male JD which is already smaller. I'm not saying that you or the others are wrong ... I'm just saying my eyes and my brains incline towards a female rather than a male. I thank u all very much for the help ... and will wait to see what's coming next. The truth is that the growth rate is quite scarry .... "she" should be around 7-8 months .... and "she's" already a little big problem. I would say ... the length at 9 months to be around 10.3", which is quite big for a female at this age.

Thanx again. I'll try to look at the genital papilla although I don't know if I'll see anything. I never net the fish just to look at it's papilla. Maybe I can see it when "she" goes up for some food. :popcorn:Maybe I can lure "her" with some TetraDiscus or an earthworm.:naughty: As soon as I become enlightened you'll be the first to know.:D
