jaguar or dovii????????

I don't know if that tank would ever get 'too small' for a male dovii - they do grow very large, however. A 28" wide tank does help give you some leeway over a 24" tank, but if the male dovii in question is pushing 22+", then you may feel like a 30-36" width would be best. Honestly though, your tank would do very well for a good long time and you'd be able to have a long time to see whether or not the one you grew out would ever attain monster size. I have heard of some males topping out at 18", and some that are over 25". Depends on genetics and tank conditions.

Well I live in Australia and I will never get a wild caught or f1 dovii I've been told that fish breed in captivity don't grow as big as wild ?

6' long 28" wide 36" deep? your tank is plenty big for a dovii. minimum tank size for a dovii is a 180 gallon 6x2x2.

Not trying to open a can of worms here, but looking at Mel O's big male dovii in his 600g I can't imagine the fish [even solo] in a tank less than half that.

No can of worms opened a 180 gallon is suitable for a dovii that is why it is recommended as a minimum not everyone can have a 400 gallon. I think at least a 210 should be minimum tank size. I seen a 20" male with a 12" female in a 90 gallon at a pet store. I will take pictures next time I'm in that area

Thats because it is temporary tank...dovii needs a lot of swimming space as it grows big and need to stretch those muscles...i found on our local forum info that dovii shouldnt be a fish for home aquarium, atleast not for life..

Just because you can cram them in there doesn't mean that it's humane. That's like living your whole life in a closet. Can you do it, yes. Should you, no. Not for life. If 210 is as big as you can go, keep fish that will be comfortable in that tank.

Amen to that. There's so many other great cichlids [jag included] that would do well in a 180g for life (or 72x28" footprint as per this thread) IMO there is no justification for keeping a massive fish like dovii in a tank that is only just wide enough for it to turn around in. A 180g would be good for some time, but not for life if you want to see the potential of your fish.

not always true i have had two male dovii reach 18 inches one was an f2 and another was even further down the chain. i prefer dovii but i like their personality better than the jag.
