Where the wild things are..
Hey guys just got a new 110g, and was wondering what would be good tank mates for jaguar cichlids? also another question I got 3 in the tank right now was wondering if they would grow up to be cool with eachother. If they do fight when they get older I will sell the meanest one probably. But anyways can you guys give me a good list of tank mates with a jaguar in a 110?

My experience so far is that Jags require alot of tank space. The only other fish I can keep with one of my jags in a 55 are bottom dwellers. Ofcourse I'm going to have to upgrade as he gets larger.

I had to bump it up to a 210 before I could keep two together comfortably. In the larger tank I have kept oscars, GT, jack dempsey, silver dollars and plecos with them successfully. However, they do harass everyone except the oscars. The oscars were there first and are the largest size wise so they keep the jags in check for the time being.

As far as temperament goes, it depends on the individual fish. If your jags pair up, I would advise against adding anything else to the tank. If they are solo males you would be fine. Personally I would keep the nicest jag and raise him as a centerpiece and add other fish to the tank to grow out with him. 3 jags in a 110 full grown would be a bit much.

You could try growing out a couple of texas cichlids or some amps like red devils, midas or maybe trimacs might work. A common pleco might grow out with them as well.

hmm alrights, that sounds like some good ideas. especially Fish on Fire's idea, i guess i'll raise the 3 for now and see who i need to sell and add more different fishes after that.

I remember my Jag. Oh man they can be some nasty fish. But it does depend on the individual. I had bought 2 and well the meaner one killed the other. I kept mine solo since he wouldnt tollerate anything in his space. I tried 3 oscars with him and he beat up all three in the time it took me to finish eating dinner. But I have seen some at the LFS and they seem fine being with other fish.

I would just keep the best one as a center piece as suggested above though. There isnt nothing to be gained from breeding these guys since there non expensive at the LFS.

Yeah i wouldn't mind if one grows into a beauty and i keep him as a center piece, i just really don't want 1 jag in my 110. Or else it'd be boring =/, but yeah we'll see.

It really does depend on the individual Jag. I have a male 11" jag with a male 10" Jack Dempsey, a 13" Mono Pbass, 8" Orino Pbass, and a 12" Sailfin Pleco. There are little tiffs every now and again but overall it is a very peaceful tank. They are all currently in a 120 (4x2x2) with a 220 waiting in my garage for them. The odd thing is, that I once housed a 10" RTC in the tank for a while and the jag tore him up, but left the others alone. So I had to get rid of the RTC.
It just depends on the Jag. I introduced the fish (except for the rtc) to the tank at the same time so there was no territory disputes. I would just add other fish gradually and see the response of the Jags. Although first I would remove the Jags from the tank and rearrange it, then add the jags and the new fish back in. Just make sure to have another tank going to save any fish that the jag doesn't like. I also found dither fish are helpful in distracting them. I use 6"-7" tin foil barbs.

Thanks for the tip sazhar, thats pretty odd how the jag would attack the bottom dweller . Funny how your fishes are the ones I'm planning to throw in my tank, I think I'm going to do it soon so the jags can grow up with the other fishes. And also I don't got an extra tank, besides one with mean FH Lol, but I can always use a divider if I see any disputes between the fishes

As everyone says, it depends on the individual's temperament. From my experience, I would say the odds are against you that a full-grown male jag will tolerate anything else in a 110. Mine certainly won't. He won't even tolerate me when im less than 20 feet away from his tank. But you never know. I can tell you, though, that a lone male jag in a 110 will not be boring. They have loads of personality.

If you're buying juveniles, then you have plenty of options for the time being, but be mindful that you'll have to sell some (all but 1?) off. Keep in mind Jags grow pretty quickly, expect an inch per month or more for the first several months.

Best bet for now would be fast-moving dithers (tin-foil barbs, silver dollars, etc) or armored catfish. You could try some other cichlids, but I'd stay away from anything parachromis.
