I'd have to say the Jag. I've owned both and the RD was more of a glass banger, but when my Jag goes into spawning mode I've never seen a better display of well placed anger than when he constantly wacks the glass and sends gravel flying with his tail.

well whan any cichlid goes into spawning mode thay usually raise hell

i won both, but i would have to break it down a little further.

the devil is more aggressive in the way of chasing all the other fish, dont back down and causes trouble in the tank all the time, but he NEVER messes with the jag, if the jag comes out the devil will run to the other side!

now, the jag doesnt bother other fish at all, he has his space and stays in it for the most part, but if another fish, especially the devil, comes into his space than he will run them off with no hesitation.

so i guess what i am trying to say is that:

RD = more aggressive

jag = more territorial, and meaner than the RD when being this way.

p.s. all fish have different personalitys, for instance, my oscar is king of the tank, of course he is the largest

RD-6 inches
jag-9 inches
oscar-11 inches

You have described my green terror and my midavil to a T...

13-14" male jag gets beaten down by a 8-9" RD in my tank, they dont fight much but the RD would win easily.

my dad's RD owns his tank, his tank mates are Male jag, male salvini, male carpinte, the Devil has to stay seperated from them cause he just wants to kill everything, devils can own a jag anyday.

you wait till ure devil reaches 8" ure jag could be 15" and i bet he still wouldnt run.

midas/RD VS a Dovii, Dovii's would own a jag anyday, i seen a vid sumwhere of a full size dovii like the one feaured in this vid killing a 14" male jag when they were spawning. this RD/midas puts up a hell of a fight in these 3 vids against a full size agro dovii pair.

video 2 : http://youtube.com/watch?v=p4Oz9rVxgLw
video 3 : http://youtube.com/watch?v=J-rRbZHJvU8

(luckily he has bought them seperate tanks now)

also when my dad used to have his female jag in with the male they were spawning once and they had to be divided off because the RD smacked the female so hard she was peeing out blood from the gills and it filled up half of a 150G 5x2x2 tank with blood. the devil was eating the jags eggs of the rock while the jags were pecking at him, he was acting as tho he couldnt feel a thing and just kept eating away happily, the jags would have been killed if not for a trusty divider.

in my experience if the jag is the dominant fish in the tank they will be extremely nasty, rd are also very aggressive, but when both fish are full grown i would say the rd doesn't stand much of shot against a jag
