So I know personality varies from fish to fish. But it seems to me the past few RTM's I've seen are monsters and won't tolerate any tankmates. Or If they do tolerate them, they bully them constantly to the point where you'd want to remove them anyways. Now I've heard of mean Jags before too, but for the most part I've seen people keeping them with all manner of other tankmates and they seem fine? Obviously they're plenty of variables, tank size, territory, ect ect. But on a whole I have found more laid back Jags then RTM's. I was just wondering everyone's personal experience with this? Does this just happen to be coincidence that I'm noticing this trend? I'd love to hear some personal experience with keeping these fish with tankmates.

I can't say I have ever kept rtm but I have heard many reports that they are more aggressive than jags on the whole.

I've never kept a Jag, but I've kept two RTM's and both time they where super aggressive. Even though I've had people tell me they are one of the more laid back Parachromis. Maybe I just have bad luck?

I have kept a jag, thought I was keeping RTMs, turned out to be YellowJackets (Guapote). These guys are pretty aggressive, especially to others of the same species.

Ultimately in my experience there are more environmental factors that are going to influence and vary aggressiveness than innate genus/species tendencies.

Nope, no coincidence here! Red Tiger Motaguense are monsters. Aggression in males especially are nearly on par with dovii

I think one important factor here that may be overlooked; Are these (ANY Parachromis) fish wild caught or captive bred? I' m sure it make a huge difference, so the scale has to be resized again. I'm sure nothing but a big Dovii is worse than a massive WC male Jaguar.

My current male jag cannot be kept with anything including plecos. It tries to attack my kids and dog.

I've had females that I raised with others until they were about 4 inches. Could never keep them with anything after that.

Never had an RTM. I do believe it depends on personalities quite a bit. I've seen jags kept with other large fish before.

Mine were all @$$holes.

I keep WC jags, the pair have there own tank for a reason. and separated 3 weeks out of every month. or I end up with a male jag and a dead female,. I have had a 9" tank bread female jag in the 180 oscar tank with no issues, until she became gravid, then she owned one side of the tank.

I have kept many jags and RTM fredi liosellei throughout my life, even a dovii here or there. I have bred both rtm and jag more than a few times and I have kept them together with loisellei and fredi in a Para tank (not including Dovii of course). Pound for pound the RTM is more aggressive then the Jag. However, once the Jag becomes 12 in+ its seem that the attitude changes and becomes a monster all of its own.

Jags are way easier to keep with tank mates than RTMs. However, It can be done as you said, control of tank size (keeping in mind that the fish will divide the tank in territories, assuming aggression levels are similar).

I have never tried to keep Parachromis in a community in anything smaller then a 210 though..

Currently, I have a jaguar that attempts to scuffle with a leopard Ctenopoma... She runs away like a big baby when he flares his spikes.
