Jaguar vs RTM

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've kept a bunch of both species and I have had way more conflicts with my RTMs than Jags. I've had a couple crazy Jags, a couple more reserved ones, but one hundred percent of the RTMs I've kept have had the same attitude. Could be a coincidence, but it doesn't seem that way.

I can't say I have ever kept rtm but I have heard many reports that they are more aggressive than jags on the whole.
I've never kept a Jag, but I've kept two RTM's and both time they where super aggressive. Even though I've had people tell me they are one of the more laid back Parachromis. Maybe I just have bad luck?
Nope, no coincidence here! Red Tiger Motaguense are monsters. Aggression in males especially are nearly on par with dovii
I have kept many jags and RTM fredi liosellei throughout my life, even a dovii here or there. I have bred both rtm and jag more than a few times and I have kept them together with loisellei and fredi in a Para tank (not including Dovii of course). Pound for pound the RTM is more aggressive then the Jag. However, once the Jag becomes 12 in+ its seem that the attitude changes and becomes a monster all of its own.

Jags are way easier to keep with tank mates than RTMs. However, It can be done as you said, control of tank size (keeping in mind that the fish will divide the tank in territories, assuming aggression levels are similar).

I have never tried to keep Parachromis in a community in anything smaller then a 210 though..
current owner of RTMs for about 3 weeks.......eating my own words from these posts ever since I bought them.....they are housed w/ other 2" Jags and one of the Jags had to be put in isolation due to missing scales and torn fins. At 2", the RTMs are WAY WORSE. Guess I shoulda owned them before I posted LOL

I'm still in shock....I never seen a Jaguar get chumped by ANYTHING until now
I think one important factor here that may be overlooked; Are these (ANY Parachromis) fish wild caught or captive bred? I' m sure it make a huge difference, so the scale has to be resized again. I'm sure nothing but a big Dovii is worse than a massive WC male Jaguar.

Lol see!! Mine where both killers man, they weren't even eating their kills. Just didn't want anything else in the tank with them. Lol and those where females. I can't imagine a male if the male's are more aggressive.

Be on the look out, punisher because your most dominant Rtm will be the new Frank castle...now that the jags are out the most dominant Rtm will turn on the rest....was barely able to raise a female to maturity with my male...on my thread you saw what the male did to the female....get a divider ready.....

So I know personality varies from fish to fish. But it seems to me the past few RTM's I've seen are monsters and won't tolerate any tankmates. Or If they do tolerate them, they bully them constantly to the point where you'd want to remove them anyways. Now I've heard of mean Jags before too, but for the most part I've seen people keeping them with all manner of other tankmates and they seem fine? Obviously they're plenty of variables, tank size, territory, ect ect. But on a whole I have found more laid back Jags then RTM's. I was just wondering everyone's personal experience with this? Does this just happen to be coincidence that I'm noticing this trend? I'd love to hear some personal experience with keeping these fish with tankmates.
I've had jags in the past 1 male 2 female in a 240g all around 14" (tankbred fish though) and they were total pussycats, they were so passive it was silly, still to this day have know idea why, nether the less they were really stunning fish that loved there food, I've never had a RTM yet so can't comment on them apart from they look stunning in pics lol.

Yo, I couldn't resist these little beauties, at $10 each and I actually got to pick which fish I wanted from the clutch, visually, instead of saying "Just send me _______". The Jags ended up in my hands by mishap,-- a screwed up order I thought was cancelled and I felt bad leaving the girl at the LFS w/ them so I took them too. There are 2 more mystery fish in with those 4 that will be a surprise and about 10 catfish and plecos - Synos, Raphael, Bulldogs, Gibbicep, Corys all around 2". Pretty sure the biggest is a male - it's an RTM w/ a few small faint spots on the gill plate, only visible sometimes. I'm splitting them up eventually, but for now they seem fine together. The other Jag is healed up and looks great, I can put him back in GP whenever if I want....the other Jag is not so much of a push-over, somehow he's the darkest Jag I ever seen and is getting turquoise coloration on his dorsal and anal and caudal fins.

Anyone ever see that? A Jag w/ turquoise? I had a big male w/ purple in the pattern, but never seen turquoise

I paired my 11 inch Dovii with an 5 inch Femate RTM, could not find any female Dovii and had an extra female RTM.... the Dovii has torn fins :) nothing serious though....
