Isnt there something like corals glow under UV like a scorpion? I saw it on Blue Planet. Sorry, I'm not a coral expert, wish I was. :) So does anyone ever put UV lights on coral?

I've always wanted a scorpion as my nightlight! :D

Actinic lights make the corals colors show, we all use actinic lighting.

Dont know if this has been posted or not..... You also have to understand that use "accent" colored lighting to make certain colors seem much more colorfull. Alot of these corals have coloration that would be very drab under a "normal" 6500-20K light.

And also not just Actinic lighting either, I am talking about colored spot light bulbs. Reds/Greens/Blues.

Yes, I already explained that several posts up. Although with the care these reefs receive they certainly wouldn't look "drab" under "normal" light, the water there is just as pure as ours, they just keep everything spotlessly clean, prefer rimless tanks with no bracing, and spot lighting to make the corals shine even more.

I wouldn't mind having lights like that, personally.

I believe the first picture is lit by "normal" lighting, 3 250w 20K HQI I think...

No I mean the fat dancing guy with the DDR arrows! xD

Anyone answer my UV question?

Oh who's are they?

why does it cost so much? what is it the electricity on all the filter/lighting or the water?

Don't remember where I got it.

I answered... They glow under Actinic and "Blue" lighting... Didn't you read my answer ?

Idk who these people are, they're just pictures I found on the Internet of reefs from japan, the way they keep their tanks is very different then us in subtle ways, and it makes all the difference in the world.

The lighting isn't subtle though, their lighting is intense and they spot light corals (A single 150/175/250 watt MH for a SINGLE coral) to make them look flawless.

The lighting is extremely expensive, plus you need a strong chiller with that type of light in the water, they also heavily over skim... Their tanks basically are overdone to an extreme.

A guy i knew was spending $600 a month on 6 400w MH lights, and a 1/2 HP chiller with a 1/4 HP Backup chiller.

there were a bunch of posts at the same time! sorry haha! Thanks for telling me that. I was about to break into my friends house with a UV light and scan his tanks lol. :D

I don't even wanna know the cost of set up and maintanance on those tanks, not to mention the time put into it.

Chillers, dosing systems,reactors,skimmers,r/o,expensive lighting,maze-like plumbing.Too much.Reef keeping always comes across as a huge headache to me.

its not for everyone. If u attempted a reef tank u would find yourself getting deeper and deeper into the pit of addiction with this stuff. i find myself obsessing over things i couldn't have cared less about when i first started the hobby.
