Wow Japes, impressively thorough and clearly put.
I definitely think I have a better grasp as to what a Sump is.

Thanks so much!

Oh, I have a question:
You mentioned that you have river sand as your substrate (tank floor?).
Well, I have beach sand that I just put in. The water is murky as hell, but I am planning on ordering an air filter online (Aqua Clear 50 for my 20 gal. tank). Will this clear up my tank? What other things do you think are necessary to my tank?

I'm not sure whether beach sand is a great choice for a freshwater tank.

Basically, for a running freshwater tank you need the tank, a filter, a light, a heater, a thermometer, and a de-chlorinator (I use Seachem Prime).

This thread is getting better and better :) So much useful info! Thanks a lot, Japes. :)

Japes... Have you isolated where the noise is coming from?

It's the overflow gargling when it sucks air as a result of running faster than the pump, so adjusting the ball valve on the overflow end to match the pump silences it. Getting the right level so that the pump doesn't slowly outrun it, but so it ever so slightly outruns the pump is the tricky part.

Think I might have it now, though ;)
