since you can't keep more than 1 jar in a single tank, this gets me thinking...are the jars we buy all wide caught? or they are tank breed? if they are tank breed then how does breeder pick out breeding pairs without jars killing each other in a tank?

they dun breed in tank.... They are been bred in pond.

they can breed in tanks though, right? I've seen videos of asians doing it, why can't jars? or is it the aggression issue?

Its more than likely the aggression levels of the jars in a confined space. Those ponds they use to breed aros in Singapore and everything are HUGE!! Check out arofanatics and you can see some of their farm visits. I tried a comm of Jars once, I bought 5 and 2 silvers well after I lost one jar the silvers and jars were fighting so I ended up selling all except one. In short I dont think a jar comm is really going to happen, im sure its possible but very unlikely.

so does that mean as long as you have a large enough tank you can house multiples jar in it or with other fish? any idea minimum space requirement to completely eliminate the aggression?? ie. 1000 gallon?? (just a guess)

It's not common to breed aro in tanks. It's rare infact. If it' easy then farm wun have to spend that much in buying bigger piece of land to have breeding ponds for their breeding stock.

but what makes it so hard to breed them unless they are in ponds? The space? The plant cover? i heard that is you get a really large tank (500g+) that is super heavily planted, it is possible to breed your aros

We cant tell infact. Some may have the luck of housing them together but some doesnt. It really depend on them not us. You can provide the space, but I seriously dun think that's enough if you're talking about breeding them in there. They're extremely territorial when it come to breeding. A pond is much preferred due to the amount of space in there.

I think what Koji is trying to get across in a nutshell is that it's difficult to breed them period in captivity. In order for any fish to breed, any species, they have to determine that conditions are perfect for raising young. When you get to a species like a Jardini Arowana, it gets extremely difficult to get the fish to think "everything's ok". The amount of gallons the tank holds will always be an issue, but more importantly is the fish's mental image of it's environment (your tank). If it doesn't think there's enough room or just wants to be a jerk it won't breed. Ponds are more closely related to their wild environment, so I'd guess they'd always have a better chance at breeding than an aquarium, even if you can get one that is the same volume of gallons.

I don't think it's impossible though, it'd be really cool to have the room to set up a large tank and try to breed them I think. Probably just going to be a lot of factors involved that are out of your hands.

i have seen a tank with 2x 18" jar's in it.. will try to get a photo of it for you...

just saying its POSSIBLE, not likely to work
