Just going by my experience with my black aro at around 17-18". She never went after the cardinal tetras when I kept them with her. When I tried the congos I lost 4 in five nights. Seemed the congos where big enough to make a meal and the cardinals just were not worth it.

She is now in a tank with a bunch of serpae tetras, I don't think she is munching on them, but someone is I've lost 6 over a 3 week period. Probably the pimelodus catfish. Going to remove it and the sevrums and add some cardinals to the mix

I see makes sense kinda goes back when russ84 said the lazy Jar well not lazy but smart I guess... thanks for the info I will keep the updates and start thinking about small schooling fish LOL:grinno:

Hmmm i have to try this theory of "not worthwhile to go after" tank mates. I recon my aros would go for anything.

In any case, those congos are feeders for sure

Very nice, the jar has alot more color in him than most I've seen.

Well all is still OK lost no congos the JAR ate this morning came home a liitle later than usual and seems to be ready to eat but who knows... he's owner responsive I think cause he's just curious as to what will he gonna get this time LOL. I will give it a week before adding more congos... thanks for all the positive responses and will update with pics when I add more congos or if the congos go missing...

About a month later.... down to 3 congos lost 4 to the Jar I believe it was due to getting him off the fresh shrimp to sinking carnivor and food sticks but all has been good for the past weeks since he has taken to the sinking carnivor dont think I will add anymore congos the convicts have bred a while back and attack the jar bad news is he attacks back and the convicts must stay hidden in the wood, the jar does not attack the fry though??? thinking of adding some neons but not sure they willhang wih the congos. anybody got ideas of who will school with the congos other than congos and smaller sorry for spellings or whatever but Im kinda drunk typing lol thanks...

Ouch, them congos can be expensive feeders. I recently lost a few to a marbled goby. With the convicts in there your going to have to find something different then neons.

i agree...ditch the plants...no pleco's, add some polys. How about some fei fangs for dithers....

you could use fishing line to secure live plants to the wood or rocks, I prefer to drill a couple of holes through the driftwood and push the stems of your plants through- I usually make the hole around 3/8" for loose stemmed plants- plant weights could also work, but they seem to be getting more difficult to find and they dont give the plants anything to root themselves to
