Ok well my Jardini just busted his jaw overnight it appears that he went to get a minnow and scraped it on the gravel really badly. I put him in the Hospital tank and now he is on Meds. This issue has made me decide to go with sand in the 135 gallon. Anyone have good sources in the NJ/NY area for sand? I don't want to buy it at any LFS because it would be very expensive to fill a 135 with that much sand. I have herd swimming pool sand is really good for FW aquariums? Anyone have experience with this? I Prefer black color if there is such a thing?

i dont think they have black pool filter sand. but if you wanted pool filter sand you can pick it up at home depot, lowes, or any swimming pool supply store. or save ur money and buy black tahitian moon sand online or lfs. thats what i have right now it makes ur tank look badass.

You can also go bare bottom, one time my jar got spooked and ripped his lower lip off. I just add salt and bump the temp up. Are you sure it was the gravel that caused this? my tank is bare bottom with no decorations and he still messed his lip up that badly.

3m color quartz makes a variety of colors but make sure you clean it very very well, the crap is mega dirty. Also, I didnt like the fine grade they offered very much... it sucked up really easily. Might want to try the t grade.

The looked at me like I was an alien or somthing for asking about it. Then I went to the pool isle and also the construction and finally the recreation Isle and NADA. I did find this white Play sand and I read in a post that it would be ok:

One of the forums had this to say regarding "Play Sand" that is found in home depot:

http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums...67&postcount=8

"It says on the bag "not recomended" because of a contractual non-compete agreement between the supplier of the sand and another aquarium products company. This play sand is the exact same sand that you see in the [acronym:fa8b0314f4="Local Fish Store"]LFS[/acronym:fa8b0314f4] for $20 for a 25 pound bag"

So I just got back from buying some:

I brought some of the brand KolorScape Play Sand. It is a very Nice White/Grey color. Distributed by OldCastle Lawn & Garden.

I gave it the vinegar test and it failed miserably. It looked like I was holding a cup of alka-seltzer.

Oh well I guess that is why we test for ourselves...lol

Where can I buy black tahitian moon sand online for a cheap price? I dont want to spend 100 bucks just to have gravel in my aquarium is ya know what I mean?

Cheapest youll find black moon sand is $20 a bag. Get the 3M color quartz if you can find it locally, much cheaper.
