i started off with my jar at about 1.5-2" and i fed him live black worms. its usually easier to feed jars live food and they dont usually take dry food off the bat from my experience. i just fed him black worms until he got to a decent size and then starved him to take dry food.

as for keeping a silver and jar together. chances are not likely, but you shouldnt have a problem right now. jar wont beat anything up. if you really want to do this combo, IMO from my experiences was to keep the jar occupied with tankmates at all times from a young age. then i added my silver after the jar hit the 6-7" mark, but make sure the silver is about 9". after that, the silver and jar have always been together and the jar is almost caught up in size with the silver, only has like 1-1.5" more to go before he catches up to the silver.

i did add 2 silvers when i intially did this, i put in a 9" and a 7" silver, but the 9" silver beat the hell out of the 7"

thanks for the info! i really needed help in this department. what kind of tankmates do you recommend?

at a young age and small size you can put anything. i put 1" dats, angel fish, danios (but they eventually became food).

your options are pretty open, as long as they dont fit in his mouth and they are not too aggressive. just keep the jar with other tank mates and hope that yours will get use to the idea of having other room mates. that was my theory behind it and it hasnt failed yet (knock on wood)

sorry for being so open, its just that i want to see what kind of other fish i can put in the tank with the hope of putting in a silver aro (which will be bigger than the jar) along with my jar. like you said i have to get it used to the fact that there will be other fish in the tank also. hopefully it will tho.
thank you all for your help in this matter.:)
