I'm going with large cichlids too, I'd say an oscar or red devil. A fahaka puffer is also really active and very aggressive, but it needs hard shelled foods so that may or may not be an issue (depending on how easily you can get snails, clams, crayfish, prawn, etc.)
What’s the largest cichlid I could fit in a 240 gallon then?

an 8'x2'x2'? You could get away with a Jaguar or umbee cichlid, they hit 24 inches so it will be a tight fit, I'd suggest a black nasty as they hit 18 inches.
I’d love to do an umbee. So one would work for life in a 240 gallon?
