I just bought a Jardini and he was real shy when I put him in the tank, he would swim irratically as if he's perminently scared, it's been about a month now and he still acts the same way he just hides under the drift wood once in a while he would come out and swim but would freak out and go back under the wood. He's about 4 1/2 inches. Is it normal behavior when they are young???

little guy shouldve gotten use to the tank by now.. when i first got mine it reacted the same way but shortly after 2 weeks it was less aggitated and at the 1 month mark he stays near the top of the tank. i guess you should keep the lights off and possibly wrap the tank with newspaper. does it have any tankmates?

Probably still adjusting to his surroundings, he will snap out of it soon, luckily my silver at 6"-7" already lets me hand feed it. :D

i was hand feeding mine for a week now its on a hunger strike, im quite worried

Try to provide some tank cover. You can get some real or plastic floating plants. These make them feel secure. I had duckweed growing in my 55 gallon tank when my jar was a baby. It gets in the filter though. Mine was skittish but you should see him 2 years later. Bites my finger if I mess with the tank.

It's just him in the tank and I threw in a bunch of feeders I caught from the river, He comes out and swims around and eats a couple of feeders then freaks out and goes under the rock, there's a piece of drift wood and a couple bunches of plants, I was thinking about taking out the rock. I'm hoping he'll grow some balls and snap out of it...

it's funny my jar is a little wimp during the day.

but during feeding time he'll jump and eat right out of my hand
I currently use aro sticks and occasionally superworms.

and at night when the only lights on are the aquarium lights, he'll swim right up to me and follow me around.

Jardini's are funny

I had he exact same problem with my piranhas, I had 2 large pieces of driftwood in my tank and they would constantly hide under it, sometimes ignoring food because of this. I finally got fed up and took both pieces out, lo and behold they "grew some balls" and now swim all over the tank. After about 2 weeks of this I added one of the pieces in and they no longer hid in it. so yeah, lol that worked for me. sorry about my rambling story.
